Season Review
Tennessee Titans 2016
Following a dismal 3-13 campaign in 2015, the 2016 Tennessee Titans completely reshaped their franchise identity under head coach Mike Mularkey. Adopting a smashmouth philosophy, Tennessee reinforced the offensive line by drafting rookie tackle Jack Conklin and signing center Ben Jones. The Titans engineered a remarkable turnaround, finishing 9-7 to secure second place in the AFC South. Although they narrowly missed the postseason on division tiebreakers with the Houston Texans, this six-win improvement marked the franchise's first winning season since 2011 and signaled an exit from the conference cellar.
Tennessee's offense ranked 14th in scoring with 381 points (23.8 ppg) and third in rushing with 2,187 yards. Quarterback Marcus Mariota made a dramatic second-year leap, throwing for 3,426 yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The primary engine was veteran running back DeMarco Murray, who earned Pro Bowl honors with 1,287 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, supported by rookie Derrick Henry's 490 yards and five scores. Receiver Rishard Matthews posted team highs with 65 receptions, 945 yards and nine touchdowns, while Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker added 65 catches of his own for 800 yards and seven scores behind Pro Bowl tackle Taylor Lewan.
Defensively, Tennessee allowed 378 points (23.6 ppg) and featured a dominant run defense that ranked second in the NFL by yielding just 1,413 rushing yards. Outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan spearheaded the pass rush, recording 10.5 and 9.0 sacks respectively, while interior force Jurrell Casey earned a Pro Bowl nod with five sacks. Inside linebacker Avery Williamson led the squad with 104 tackles. However, the secondary struggled, ranking 30th against the pass by surrendering 4,307 yards, forcing rookie safety Kevin Byard into immediate trial-by-fire action across all 16 games.
The season featured dramatic high points and heartbreak. After starting 1-3, Tennessee rebounded, highlighted by a 47-25 dismantling of Green Bay in Week 10. In December, the Titans edged Denver 13-10 before Ryan Succop drilled a game-winning 53-yard field goal at the buzzer to defeat Kansas City 19-17 in Week 15. The turning point arrived tragically in Week 16 at Jacksonville; a devastating 38-17 loss was compounded by Mariota suffering a season-ending fractured fibula. Backup Matt Cassel guided Tennessee to a Week 17 win over Houston, but the playoff damage was done.
While missing the postseason stung, 2016 laid the foundation for Tennessee's future relevance. Five Titans earned Pro Bowl selections - Murray, Walker, Lewan, Casey, and Orakpo - while Conklin earned First-Team All-Pro recognition as a rookie. Mariota was on the way to cementing his status as a legitimate franchise quarterback, while Murray and Henry established a punishing backfield tandem. By establishing an identity rooted in physical dominance and offensive efficiency, Tennessee announced its return as an AFC contender.
