Season Review
Tennessee Oilers 1998
The 1998 Tennessee Oilers season was a story of transition, as the franchise attempted to redefine itself on and off the field., playing their final year under the Oilers moniker before officially becoming the Titans. Playing home games at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville while awaiting the completion of their new downtown stadium, head coach Jeff Fisher guided the team to another 8-8 record, finishing second in the AFC Central Division. Coming off an identical 8-8 campaign in 1997, expectations centered around quarterback development and roster stabilizing through high-profile additions. The front office invested heavily in the offseason, signing high-priced free agent wide receiver Yancey Thigpen, tight end Jackie Harris, while drafting wide receiver Kevin Dyson, guard Benji Olson, and adding to the defense with linebacker Eddie Robinson and defensive back draft pick Samari Rolle. Despite these moves, the club fell short of a postseason berth.
Offensively, the Oilers ranked 13th in scoring with 330 points (20.6 ppg) and 9th in total yards with 5,261, utilizing a run-heavy approach anchored by a punishing ground game. Starting quarterback Steve McNair anchored the offense, throwing for 3,228 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, while adding 559 rushing yards and four scores on the ground. Tailback Eddie George carried the workload with 348 rushes for 1,294 yards and five touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl selection. Pro Bowl tight end Frank Wycheck led all receivers with 70 receptions for 768 yards. Free-agent wide receiver Yancey Thigpen was limited to nine games due to injury, recording 38 catches for 493 yards. Rookie Kevin Dyson contributed 21 catches for 263 yards.
The defense finished 12th in the league in points allowed conceding 320 (20.0 ppg) on the season and 16th in yards allowed (5,121). Linebacker Joe Bowden topped the tackling charts with 103 total tackles, alongside 1.5 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown. Free agent addition Eddie Robinson stabilized the corps with 90 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Cornerback Darryll Lewis led the secondary with four interceptions, while rookie Samari Rolle chipped in two sacks and one forced fumble. Safety Blaine Bishop collected 85 tackles, three sacks and an interception. The defense accumulated 30 total sacks and 12 interceptions on the year. On special teams, punter Craig Hentrich had a career year, averaging 47.2 yards per punt to earn First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
The season opened on a volatile note, as an early 1-3 slump was erased by a three-game winning streak. The turning point arrived in mid-season when the team won three straight games against division rival Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and Pittsburgh again, climbing to 6-4. Highlights included a blowout 44-14 home win over Cincinnati in Week 7 and a tight 16-13 road victory over division-rival Jacksonville in Week 15. However, late-season losses to playoff powerhouses Green Bay (30-22) and Minnesota (26-16) in Weeks 16 and 17 dashed any remaining postseason hopes, leaving the squad at .500.
Missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year marked the end of the Oilers brand. Despite the mediocre finish, the 1998 season laid the tactical and personnel blueprint for the franchise’s Super Bowl XXXIV run the following year. Individual accolades were highlighted by Pro Bowl selections for Eddie George, Bruce Matthews, Frank Wycheck, and Craig Hentrich. This transitional team holds significance as the final NFL club to wear the Derrick logo and the Oilers name, closing a major chapter before rebranding as the Tennessee Titans in 1999.
