Season Review
Tennessee Titans 2013
Entering the 2013 season, the Tennessee Titans were searching for identity and stability under head coach Mike Munchak. Big-money offseason investments in the offensive line, namely high-priced free agent guard Andy Levitre and first-round draft pick Chance Warmack, signaled a clear desire to re-establish a bruising, run-first mentality. Veterans like tight end Delanie Walker, safety Bernard Pollard, and backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick were brought in to inject leadership and grit. However, early promise dissolved into midseason frustration, leaving Tennessee with a 7-9 record and a second-place finish in the AFC South. The missing of the postseason cost Munchak his job, closing a mediocre chapter in franchise history.
Offensively, the season hinged on third-year quarterback Jake Locker, who showed legitimate growth early on before a series of injuries restricted him to just seven starts. Fitzpatrick stepped in to start nine games, throwing for 2,454 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions as the offense ranked 19th in scoring with 362 points (22.6 ppg) and 22nd in total yards. Running back Chris Johnson eclipsed the thousand-yard mark once again with 1,077 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground, while also catching 42 passes and adding 345 receiving yards. Second-year wideout Kendall Wright emerged as the team's most reliable target, pulling in 94 receptions for 1,079 yards to keep the passing attack afloat.
On the other side of the ball, the defense ranked 16th in points allowed (23.8 ppg) and 14th in total yards under coordinator Jerry Gray, showing flashes of real disruption. Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey posted a breakout campaign with 10.5 sacks, earning Second-Team All-Pro honors while anchoring the interior pass rush. In the secondary, cornerback Alterraun Verner enjoyed a stellar Pro Bowl season, recording five interceptions and a league leading 22 pass deflections. Pollard added toughness to the safety spot, leading the team with 99 combined tackles. Despite those individual efforts, the defense struggled down the stretch, particularly when forced to stay on the field for long drives during offensive lulls.
Tennessee's campaign was defined by maddening inconsistency and pivotal turning points. A surprising 3-1 start was highlighted by a dramatic Week 3 victory over the San Diego Chargers, sealed by a late Locker touchdown pass. However, Locker suffered a hip injury the following week against the New York Jets, disrupting the team's momentum. A brutal 29-27 home loss to the winless Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10 severely damaged their playoff hopes, and an overtime defeat to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15 officially eliminated them from contention, despite back-to-back division wins over Jacksonville and Houston to close out December.
The 2013 Titans were a textbook 'what if' team defined by Locker's fragility and missed opportunities. Missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year led directly to Munchak's dismissal, signaling a full organizational reset. Beyond the disappointment, the season served as the peak of Casey's national emergence and marked the end of the Chris Johnson era in Nashville. While individual standouts like Verner and Casey achieved personal accolades, the team's lingering mediocrity ensured that 2013 would be remembered as a transitional bridge toward a new era of football in Music City.
