Season Review
Tennessee Titans 2004
Coming off a 12-4 campaign in 2003, Jeff Fisher’s Tennessee Titans hit a massive wall in 2004. Under severe salary cap strain, the front office surrendered crucial pillars of the franchise's identity: workhorse Eddie George was released,pass-rusher Jevon Kearse left for Philadelphia, and tight end Frank Wycheck retired. Add in an avalanche of midseason injuries, and the Titans completely imploded to a 5-11 record, landing last in the AFC South. It marked their lowest win total since 1994 back when they were still the Houston Oilers, officially closing the book on the team's first great Nashvillian era.
Mike Heimerdinger’s offense somehow stayed competent, ranking 15th in scoring with 344 points (21.5 ppg) and 11th in total yards. MVP quarterback Steve McNair battled lingering injuries and was limited to eight starts, passing for 1,343 yards, eight touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Backup Billy Volek stepped into the spotlight and slung it around, throwing for 2,486 yards and 18 touchdowns but went 2-6 in his eight starts. With George gone, sophomore tailback Chris Brown emerged as a bright spot, rushing for 1,067 yards at 4.9 yards per carry. Out wide, Drew Bennett enjoyed a career year with 80 catches for 1,247 yards and 11 touchdowns alongside Derrick Mason, who posted 96 receptions for 1,168 yards.
Jim Schwartz’s defense, however, was an unmitigated disaster. Stripped of pass-rushing depth, Tennessee bled points, giving up 439 (27.4 ppg) overall to finish 30th in the NFL. Linebacker Keith Bulluck tried to hold the defense together with an extraordinary effort, leading the unit with 152 total tackles, five sacks, and two interceptions. Defensive tackle Kevin Carter added six sacks, while cornerback Andre Dyson recorded six interceptions. Yet, without any secondary depth or consistent pressure upfront, the defense repeatedly folded late in games, regularly surrendering 30-plus points.
The season broke down during a miserable five-game losing streak through late autumn. The low point arrived in December when the defense surrendered back-to-back blowouts: a 51-24 thrashing against Peyton Manning’s Colts followed by a 49-38 shootout loss to Kansas City on Monday Night Football. A 40-35 defeat in Oakland and a 37-16 Christmas Day loss to Denver cemented a dismal 1-5 run over their final six contests where the defense conceded an average of 37.8 point per contest. Outside of a chaotic 48-27 win over Green Bay in Week 5, the Titans rarely looked like a competitive unit.
Missing the postseason for the first time since 2001, the 5-11 outcome served as a sobering reality check. The 2004 campaign is remembered as the pivotal bridge season where the Super Bowl XXXIV core officially dissolved. While Billy Volek and Drew Bennett put together electric statistical stretches, the cap casualty aftermath laid bare a roster in desperate need of a full reconstruction.
