Season Review
Tennessee Titans 2003
Fresh off an AFC Championship Game appearance, Jeff Fisher’s 2003 Tennessee Titans entered the year with super-sized expectations. Behind a battle-tested roster, Tennessee rolled through the regular season to post a 12-4 record, securing second place in a competitive AFC South. Draft picks like running back Chris Brown provided depth behind an established core. Despite battling injuries across the roster throughout the autumn campaign, Fisher’s squad proved to be a very solid team, scoring 435 points (27.2 ppg) while yielding only 324 (20.3 ppg). Their regular season prowess earned them a playoff berth, culminating in a Wild Card victory before an agonizing exit in the Divisional Round.
Mike Heimerdinger’s West Coast offense operated with lethal efficiency, relying the ground game to open up a explosive aerial assault. NFL Co-MVP Steve McNair delivered a masterclass, throwing for 3,215 yards and 24 touchdowns against just seven interceptions across 14 games, while adding four rushing scores. When McNair missed time, veterans Billy Volek and Neil O’Donnell filled in seamlessly to keep the engine humming. Derrick Mason served as the clear top target, hauling in 95 receptions for 1,303 yards and eight touchdowns. Workhorse Eddie George anchored the ground game with 1,031 yards and five touchdowns, while Justin McCareins stepped up as a dangerous big-play wideout with 813 receiving yards.
Jim Schwartz’s 4-3 defense was defined by an immovable front line that completely neutralized opposing running games, finishing rank first in the NFL in rushing yards allowed at a stingy 1,295. First-team All-Pro linebacker Keith Bulluck was the undisputed heartbeat of the unit, posting 137 total tackles, three sacks, and five forced fumbles. Up front, edge rusher Jevon Kearse racked up 9.5 sacks, complemented by defensive tackle Robaire Smith and defensive end Kevin Carter. In the secondary, Pro Bowl cornerback Samari Rolle picked off six passes, while safety Lance Schulters and corner Andre Dyson consistently disrupted passing lanes to help secure a top-ten defense in takeaways by forcing 34 turnovers.
Tennessee’s season featured impressive runs and crucial measuring-stick games. After a early-season 33-7 loss to Peyton Manning’s Colts in Week 2, and a 38-30 loss to the Patriots in week 5, the Titans hit their stride by rattling off a six-game winning streak from Week 6 through Week 12. Highlighted by a 31-7 dominant win over Miami and a 38-31 shootout in Atlanta, Tennessee looked unstoppable heading into late November. A minor two-game hiccup against the Jets and Colts in early December briefly threatened their division title push, but the Titans responded like contenders. They closed out the regular season on a pristine three-game winning streak, capped by a 33-13 statement victory over Tampa Bay.
In the postseason, the Titans traveled to Baltimore for an intense AFC Wild Card matchup, prevailing 20-17 thanks to a late-game drive capped by a 46 yard Gary Anderson field goal. Their run came to a heartbreaking end the following week in Foxborough, falling 17-14 to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in sub-zero temperatures. The 2003 season remains significant for Steve McNair sharing NFL MVP honors with Peyton Manning, cementing his place in football lore. This 12-4 group stood out as one of the most complete and tough-minded squads in franchise history.
