Fresh off coming one yard short in Super Bowl XXXIV, Jeff Fisher’s 2000 Tennessee Titans entered the year carrying a massive target on their backs. Tennessee reloaded by signing tackle Fred Miller, linebacker Randall Godfrey, and receiver Carl Pickens, while drafting linebacker Keith Bulluck. The moves paid off as Tennessee marched to another 13-3 record, captured the AFC Central title, and secured the AFC’s top seed. The offensive identity was clear: pound the football and control time of possession. Running back Eddie George was an absolute workhorse, recording 403 carries for 1,509 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 453 yards trough the air for a total of 1,962 scrimmage yards to earn first-team All-Pro honors. Steve McNair managed the offense expertly, throwing for 2,847 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 403 rushing yards. Tight end Frank Wycheck reeled in 70 passes, while Derrick Mason compiled 895 receiving yards. Behind Hall of Fame guard Bruce Matthews, Tennessee ranked first in rushing attempts with 547 and scored 346 points (21.6 ppg).

If the offense was the hammer, the defense was the anvil. Tennessee fielded the NFL’s top-ranked defense in yards allowed conceding only 3,813 on the year and ranking first in passing yards allowed (2,423), while finishing second in points allowed giving up 191 (11.9 ppg). Defensive end Jevon Kearse headlined the pass rush with 11.5 sacks. Free-agent signing Randall Godfrey racked up 121 tackles in the middle, while cornerback Samari Rolle earned first-team All-Pro honors with seven interceptions. Supported by safety Blaine Bishop and defensive end Kenny Holmes who recorded 8.0 sacks, Tennessee held opponents to 14 points or less in eleven games.

Tennessee’s regular season was defined by a suffocating defense. After an opening-week loss to Buffalo, the Titans reeled off eight straight wins, including key road victories over Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington. A late-season surge saw Tennessee win four straight to close the year, punctuated by a Christmas Night beatdown of Dallas. In that 31-0 shutout, the Titans held the Cowboys to a laughable 95 total yards and only 9 net passing yards. That win locked up home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs and solidified Adelphia Coliseum as an absolute nightmare for visitors.

Yet, postseason destiny slipped away in heartbreak. In the Divisional Round against rival Baltimore, the Titans outgained the Ravens 317 to 134, but a blocked field goal return touchdown and a late turnover handed Baltimore a 24-10 upset. Despite the abrupt exit, the 2000 Titans stand as the peak of the Fisher era.
