Season Review
Tennessee Titans 2005
Entering the 2005 campaign, Jeff Fisher’s Tennessee Titans were stuck in the mud, attempting to navigate an extensive cap-driven youth movement following a disappointing 5-11 the year prior. The roster purge continued as veteran targets like Derrick Mason departed, forcing the front office to retool through the draft with high-profile rookies like cornerback Adam 'Pacman' Jones and offensive tackle Michael Roos. The growing pains proved overwhelming in a loaded AFC South. Tennessee stumbled to a 4-12 finish, landing third in the division and missing the postseason for a second consecutive year. It was a grueling transition year defined by defensive meltdowns and an offense struggling to generate explosive plays.
Mike Heimerdinger’s passing game relied heavily on short, ball-control distributions, leaving the offense ranked 21st in scoring at 299 points (18.7 ppg) and 17th in total yardage. In his final season wearing the Titans jersey, veteran signal-caller Steve McNair started 14 games, throwing for 3,161 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. With minimal vertical threat out wide, McNair leaned on tight ends Erron Kinney and Ben Troupe, who combined for 110 catches and 1,073 yards. The running game lacked bite as Chris Brown led the backfield with 851 rushing yards and five touchdowns at a subpar 3.8 yards per attempt. Meanwhile, Drew Bennett paced all wide receivers with 58 receptions for 738 yards.
Defensively, Jim Schwartz’s unit hit rock bottom, surrendering 421 points (26.3 ppg) to rank 29th in the NFL while placing 32nd in passing touchdowns allowed. The lone bright spot front and center was free-agent signing Kyle Vanden Bosch, who enjoyed a fantastic campaign by recording 12.5 sacks and forcing four fumbles on his way to a Pro Bowl nod. Behind him, middle linebacker Keith Bulluck delivered another heroic individual year, leading the defense with 138 total tackles and five sacks. However, a green secondary spearheaded by rookie Pacman Jones struggled with discipline, leaving the defense routinely exposed against elite passing attacks.
Tennessee's schedule offered little room for error and the season quickly spiraled into a prolonged slump as the Oilers dropped seven of eight games from late September through November. Among the lowest points were two lopsided defeats to Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts, who outscored Tennessee 66–13 across the two meetings. The Titans showed occasional flashes of promise, including a convincing Week 12 victory over the San Francisco 49ers but any momentum proved fleeting. The team ended the year with three losses against the Seahawks, Dolphins and Jaguars to end a brutal year of underperformance.
The 4-12 record cemented the end of an era in Nashville. Following the season, Steve McNair was traded to the Baltimore Ravens, closing the Tennessee chapter of the franchise’s iconic leader. Though painful, the 2005 campaign laid foundational bricks for the future, as draft picks Michael Roos and David Stewart anchored the offensive line for the next decade, while Pacman Jones made an immediate impact as a specialist. Pro Bowl nods for McNair and Vanden Bosch provided brief solace during a necessary reboot.
