Season Review
Pittsburgh Steelers 2025
The 2025 Pittsburgh Steelers season provided a spectacular, legacy-defining final chapter for the iconic Mike Tomlin era. Navigating a brutal AFC North gauntlet, the Steelers finished 10-7 to capture their first division title in four years. General manager Omar Khan went all-in during the offseason, landing legendary 42-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey, and wideout D.K. Metcalf alongside free agents Darius Slay Jr. and Malik Harrison. Tomlin masterfully guided this star-studded roster to Pittsburgh’s 22nd consecutive non-losing season, breaking the NFL record held by the Dallas Cowboys, before clinching the division in a dramatic finale.
Arthur Smith’s offense prioritized control over explosiveness, finishing 15th in points scored with 397 (23.4 ppg) and 25th in total yards. Under center, Aaron Rodgers defied Father Time by completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions. The backfield operated as a dynamic tandem; Jaylen Warren led the ground game with 958 rushing yards, while Kenneth Gainwell added 537 rushing yards and a team-high 73 catches to win team MVP honors. Out wide, D.K. Metcalf served as the primary deep threat with 850 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns, keeping the chains moving efficiently.
Defensively, Teryl Austin’s unit thrived on chaos over yardage metrics, ranking 26th in yards allowed and 17th in points surrendered (22.8 ppg) but forcing 27 crucial takeaways. Alex Highsmith spearheaded the pass rush with a team-high 9.5 sacks, while Nick Herbig broke out with 7.5 sacks. T.J. Watt remained dominant, logging 7.0 sacks and two interceptions in 14 games. In the secondary, Jalen Ramsey earned Pro Bowl honors alongside Darius Slay, while linebacker Patrick Queen recorded 120 tackles. Boosted by rookie defensive end Derrick Harmon, this clutch defense specialized in generating turnovers in pivotal moments.
The regular season opened strong at 4-1, including a 34-32 shootout over the Jets. A midseason slump culminated in a 26-7 shellacking by the Bills, dropping the team to a tense 6-6 record. The turning point arrived down the stretch, as the Steelers rallied to win four of their last five games. This run featured a 29-24 road win against the Lions to secure Tomlin’s 200th total career victory, followed by a thrilling 26-24 Week 18 victory over Baltimore to seal the North crown.
The division title high evaporated in the Wild Card round during a 30-6 blowout loss to the Houston Texans, marking Pittsburgh’s seventh straight playoff defeat. A bombshell dropped the next day when Tomlin announced he was stepping down after a legendary 19-year tenure. Despite the exit, the future looks bright as Cameron Heyward earned Second-Team All-Pro honors, while Ramsey, Watt, and special teamster Ben Skowronek made the Pro Bowl. Backed by kicker Chris Boswell’s 27 field goals, including a 60-yarder, this squad closed a legendary chapter in Steelers lore.
