Season Review
Pittsburgh Steelers 2024
Entering the 2024 campaign, the Pittsburgh Steelers embraced a risky experiment to overhaul their traditional offensive identity while leaning hard on their classic defensive backbone. Head coach Mike Tomlin welcomed new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith alongside a radically transformed quarterback room featuring high-profile free agents Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. The blueprint combined those veteran signal-callers with a heavily reinforced frontline featuring rookie center Zach Frazier and guard Mason McCormick. While expectations fluctuated wildly, the steel city delivered its signature brand of gritty, edge-of-your-seat theater. Tomlin somehow maneuvered this squad through a chaotic schedule to finish with a 10-7 regular-season record, securing a second-place finish in the notoriously brutal AFC North and clinching a hard-fought playoff berth despite an exhausting string of late-season hurdles.
Arthur Smith orchestrated a ground-heavy approach that allowed the offense to settle into league average efficiency, finishing 16th in points scored (22.4 ppg) and 23rd in total yards. Fields carried the load early, starting six games, throwing for 1,106 yards and 5 touchdowns while using his legs for an additional 289 rushing yards and 5 scores on the ground. Once healthy, Wilson seized the helm for 11 starts, compiling 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and a highly efficient 5 interceptions to stabilize the pass game. Najee Harris spearheaded the ground assault by grinding his way to 1043 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns, paired effectively with Jaylen Warren who chipped in 511 rushing yards. George Pickens operated as the undisputed alpha target on the perimeter, pulling down 59 receptions for 900 yards and 3 scores, while tight end Pat Freiermuth provided a steady safety valve in the middle of the field with a team-high 7 touchdown catches.
While the offense sought consistency, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin captained a solid aggressive unit that occasioanally gave up chunk yardage to rank 12th in total yards but clamped down completely where it mattered most, finishing 8th in points allowed (20.4 ppg). The ferocious T.J. Watt put together another terrifying campaign, destroying offensive game plans with 11.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 19 tackles for loss. Up front, veteran defensive lineman Cameron Heyward enjoyed a sensational renaissance by dominating the trenches to the tune of 8.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Free-agent linebacker Patrick Queen immediately validated his lucrative signing by spearheading the second level with a staggering 129 combined tackles, while safety Minkah Fitzpatrick anchored the secondary with 96 tackles alongside cornerback Donte Jackson, who paced the team with 5 interceptions.
The team burst out of the gate with a stellar 3-0 start and stood at a commanding 10-3 record by Week 14 following a definitive 27-14 victory over the division rival Cleveland Browns. Highlights included an offensive explosion during a 44-38 road shootout win against the Cincinnati Bengals and a signature 18-16 defensive masterpiece over the Baltimore Ravens at Acrisure Stadium in Week 11. However, the season disintegrated down the stretch as Pittsburgh suffered a devastating four-game collapse to end the regular season, dropping high-stakes matchups to the Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, and Bengals. This unexpected slump cost them the division crown and forced them into a much tougher postseason path.
The late-season hangover proved fatal in the Wild Card round, where the Steelers traveled to M&T Bank Stadium and were promptly dismantled 28-14 by the division rival Baltimore Ravens, extending their frustrating streak of consecutive one-and-done playoff appearances. Despite the disappointing exit, the legacy of the 2024 Steelers remains deeply rooted in the elite individual accolades achieved by its core anchors. Heyward and dynamic kicker Chris Boswell, who drilled an incredible 41 of 44 field goals, both earned coveted First-Team All-Pro honors. Watt added a Second-Team All-Pro nod to his legendary resume, while Frazier established himself as the team’s rookie of the year. This season preserved Tomlin’s historic streak of never logging a losing campaign, solidifying the team’s reputation as a perennially tough out even amidst roster and schematic transitions.
