Season Review
Pittsburgh Steelers 2015
The 2015 Pittsburgh Steelers season was a wild, white-knuckle rollercoaster ride that epitomized the pure chaos of the modern NFL. Entering the year with massive offensive expectations under head coach Mike Tomlin, the franchise had to navigate the monumental retirement of icon Troy Polamalu and a major coaching shift as Keith Butler took over defensive coordinator duties. Despite an avalanche of injuries and suspensions, the Steelers gritted their way to a 10-6 record, finishing second in the competitive AFC North. In typical Tomlin fashion, this resilient squad refused to buckle, securing a wild-card berth and battling all the way to the AFC Divisional round.
Todd Haley orchestrated a terrifyingly explosive, pass-heavy juggernaut that ranked third in total yards and fourth in points scored (26.4 ppg) across the league. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger missed four games but remained highly efficient when active, completing 68.0% of his throws for 3938 yards and 21 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. The passing attack revolved around the transcendent Antonio Brown, who put up an eye-popping 136 receptions for 1834 yards and 10 touchdowns. With star running back LeVeon Bell limited to six games, veteran free-agent signing DeAngelo Williams stepped up, spearheading the backfield with 907 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns to keep the offense firing on all cylinders.
Defensively, the Steelers underwent a significant philosophical transition under Butler, finishing 11th in points allowed (19.9 ppg) but dropping to 21st in total yards surrendered. While the secondary gave up chunks of yardage, finishing 30th against the pass, the frontline functioned as an absolute brick wall, ranking fifth in rushing yards allowed and limiting opponents to just 3.8 yards per carry. Defensive end Cameron Heyward led the charge upfront with 7.0 sacks, while linebacker Lawrence Timmons patrolled the middle to rack up a team-high 119 combined tackles. Stephon Tuitt added 6.5 sacks, and rookie edge rusher Bud Dupree chipped in 4.0 sacks, highlighting a ferocious pass rush that collected 47.0 sacks total.
The path to January was defined by erratic swings, highlighted by a frustrating early-season overtime loss to the rival Baltimore Ravens and a tough midseason skid. However, the season turned on its head during an electrifying stretch in December, sparked by a 45-10 demolition of the Indianapolis Colts and a massive 34-27 comeback win against the eventual champion Denver Broncos. An unfortunate late-December slip-up in Baltimore threatened to derail their entire campaign, but the Steelers rebounded in Week 17 by handling the Cleveland Browns 28-12, combined with outside help, to squeeze into the postseason.
In the playoffs, Pittsburgh outlasted the Cincinnati Bengals 18-16 in a memorable penalty-filled, toxic Wild Card matchup before bowing out in a gritty 16-23 Divisional defeat to Denver while severely shorthanded. The legacy of this 2015 team remains defined by sheer offensive brilliance in the face of adversity. Antonio Brown cemented his status as the premier wideout of his era, securing a Pro Bowl nod and First-Team All-Pro honors, while Roethlisberger and guard David DeCastro also earned a Pro Bowl selections. They proved that even when the roster was held together by duct tape, the Steelers standard of contention never wavered.
