Season Review
Pittsburgh Steelers 2021
The 2021 Pittsburgh Steelers season felt like watching an aging heavyweight boxer lean against the ropes, surviving on pure institutional muscle memory and sheer willpower. Entering the year with modest expectations due to a crumbling offensive line and a glaring lack of depth, head coach Mike Tomlin faced the monumental challenge of transitioning the franchise into its post-Maurkice Pouncey era. The front office attempted to patch holes by signing free agent tackle B.J. Finney and executing a complete youth movement on the line. Despite a roster built on hope and Scotch tape, Tomlin somehow steered the ship to a 9-7-1 record, securing a second-place finish in the brutal AFC North and squeezing into the postseason as a wild card team. It was an exhausting, drama-filled campaign that defied traditional offensive schematics but stayed entirely true to the Steel City identity.
Offensively, the Steelers operated in a hyper-compressed bubble. Ben Roethlisberger, at 39 years old, lacked the vertical arm strength of his prime, forcing Pittsburgh into an incredibly short, pass-heavy scheme that ranked 4th in league pass attempts but averaged a meager 5.4 net yards per attempt. Big Ben threw for 3,740 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, leaning heavily on a quick-release route running tree. Volume-heavy wideout Diontae Johnson blossomed into a Pro Bowler with 107 receptions for 1,161 yards and 8 scores, while rookie tight end Pat Freiermuth became a reliable red-zone target with 7 touchdowns. The ground game rested entirely on rookie running back Najee Harris, who logged a league-high 381 touches, grinding out 1,200 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns behind a porous line. In total, the offense stagnated, ranking 21st in scoring (20.2 ppg ppg) and 23rd in total yards.
While the offense sputtered, the defense operated as a chaotic, top-heavy unit that ranked 20th in points allowed (23.4 ppg) and 24th in yards surrendered. The primary culprit was an uncharacteristically atrocious run defense that finished dead last in the NFL, giving up 5.0 yards per carry. Yet, they remained competitive because of generational star power up front. Outer linebacker T.J. Watt put together one of the most destructive defensive seasons in NFL history, matching the single-season record with 22.5 sacks while forcing 5 fumbles. Beside him, defensive tackle Cameron Heyward anchored the interior with 10.0 sacks and 15 tackles for loss, earning First-Team All-Pro honors. In the secondary, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick racked up a team-high 124 tackles to prevent deep coverage disasters, helping a defense that excelled at generating sacks and timely takeaways.
Every week felt like a tightrope act, characterized by ugly first halves and furious late-game rallies. The season opened with a stunning 23-16 upset of the Buffalo Bills, fueled by special teams and pass rush, before a three-game losing streak brought reality crashing down. A midseason four-game winning streak stabilized their record, but the most frustrating game was a bizarre, mud-soaked 16-16 tie against the winless Detroit Lions in Week 10. The team suffered embarrassing blowout losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs, but they always bounced back. The definitive moments came in late-season division battles: a thrilling 20-19 victory over the rival Baltimore Ravens, a crucial Week 17 home win against the Cleveland Browns, and a Week 18 overtime triumph in Baltimore that miraculously clinched a playoff berth.
The clock struck midnight in the Wild Card round against the explosive Kansas City Chiefs, resulting in a lopsided 42-21 blowout defeat that signaled the definitive end of an era. Despite the quick playoff exit, the 2021 Steelers etched a unique place in franchise lore. T.J. Watt justly brought home the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, cementing his dominance. More than anything, this season served as the final chapter for Ben Roethlisberger, who retired having engineered 6 fourth-quarter comebacks and 7 game-winning drives in his final regular season. It was a flawed, gritty squad that overachieved on character alone, ensuring the legendary quarterback walked away having never experienced a losing season.
