Season Review
Pittsburgh Steelers 2001
The 2001 Pittsburgh Steelers season was defined by a brutal, old-school resurgence that completely altered the landscape of the AFC. Entering the year with modest expectations after consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, head coach Bill Cowher revitalized the franchise through crucial offseason additions like center Jeff Hartings and backup quarterback Tommy Maddox, alongside an impactful rookie class. The Steelers dominated the brutal AFC Central, capturing the division crown with a stellar 13-3 regular season record. This dominant run secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and returned the physical brand of ‘Steelers Football’ to the national spotlight.
Everything on offense operated through a punishing, physical ground game that ranked number one in the NFL with 2,774 rushing yards. Jerome Bettis was the definitive engine of the unit, steamrolling defenders for 1,072 yards in just 11 games. When the defense loaded the box, Kordell Stewart engineered a highly efficient attack, throwing for 3,109 yards and 14 touchdowns while chipping in an additional 537 yards and five scores on the ground. Stewart carefully distributed targets to an emerging wideout tandem in Hines Ward, who caught 94 passes for 1,003 yards, and Plaxico Burress, who added 1,008 yards, helping Pittsburgh finish seventh in league scoring, averaging 22.0 points per contest.
While the offense wore opponents down, a terrifying, top-ranked Blitzburgh defense finished number one in total yards allowed and third in points allowed surrending 13.3 point per game. First-round nose tackle Casey Hampton anchored the interior, completely eliminating opposing running games and holding teams to a league-low 1,195 rushing yards all season. This wall upfront allowed linebackers Jason Gildon, who recorded 12 sacks, and Joey Porter, who added nine, to relentlessly hunt opposing quarterbacks. Rookie linebacker Kendrell Bell was an absolute revelation, flying around the field to rack up 82 total tackles and nine sacks while providing a fierce, intimidating presence in the middle of the field.
Outside of a painful 21-3 opening day loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Steelers spent most of the season on a phenomenal tear. The definitive turning point arrived during an intensive mid-season stretch where Pittsburgh won seven consecutive games, highlighted by a 34-7 blowout of the rival Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football. Even when Bettis went down with a mid-season injury, the roster proved its resilience. Backup running backs Chris Fuamatu-Maafala and Amos Zereoue stepped up dynamically to anchor the ground game, grinding out crucial victories against the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens to secure the AFC’s top seed.
In the divisional round of the playoffs, the Steelers utterly suffocated the defending champion Baltimore Ravens in a 27-10 physical mismatch. However, the magical run came to a crashing halt in the AFC Championship Game, where a brutal four-turnover performance fueled a heartbreaking 24-17 home loss to the eventual champion New England Patriots. Despite the painful exit, the legacy of the 2001 squad remains highly significant as the blueprint for Pittsburgh’s 2000s dominance. Kordell Stewart, Bettis, Ward, and Gildon earned Pro Bowl honors, and the spectacular performance of Kendrell Bell was recognized league-wide as he deservingly captured the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
