Season Review
Pittsburgh Steelers 2002
The 2002 Pittsburgh Steelers entered the dawn of the newly formed AFC North with high expectations but immediately stumbled into an existential crisis. Head coach Bill Cowher watched his squad drop their first two contests to New England and Oakland, sparking an immediate quarterback controversy. Yet, the resilient Steelers rallied to finish 10-5-1, capturing the inaugural AFC North crown. The biggest catalyst of this mid-season metamorphosis was an unexpected quarterback resurrection that transformed a traditionally ground-and-pound franchise into an aerial circus, proving that Cowher still had a few tricks up his sleeve.
That quarterback savior was Tommy Maddox, a former XFL MVP who replaced an ineffective Kordell Stewart and threw for 2,836 yards and 20 touchdowns over 15 games. Maddox injected life into a dynamic passing offense that propelled Pittsburgh to a number eight league ranking in scoring with 390 points (24.4 ppg) and number five in total yards with 5,952. Maddox benefited from a terrifyingly elite wide receiver tandem; Hines Ward caught a staggering 112 passes for 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns, while the towering Plaxico Burress mirrored him with 78 receptions for 1,325 yards with 7 touchdowns. This aerial explosion complemented a backfield committee where Amos Zereoue led the team with 762 rushing yards and Jerome Bettis chipped in nine rushing scores.
Defensively, Pittsburgh was a an aggressive unit which occasionally got burnt, finishing an average 16th in points allowed (21.6 ppg) but clamping down to finish 7th in total yards surrendered. The undisputed calling card of this unit was its suffocating run defense, which ranked first in the NFL by giving up just 1,375 yards on the ground all year. Up front, nose tackle Casey Hampton anchored the line, freeing up a ferocious linebacking corps. Outside linebacker Joey Porter put together a sensational First-team All-Pro campaign, racking up nine sacks and matching that disruption with four interceptions, while fellow linebacker Jason Gildon added another nine sacks to terrorize opposing quarterbacks.
To understand the absurdity of this season, look no further than the bizarre sequence of key moments. After righting the ship post-bye week, Pittsburgh played to a frantic 34-34 overtime tie against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 10. But the pinnacle of football weirdness occurred in Week 14 against the expansion Houston Texans. The Steelers outgained Houston by a comical margin of 422 to 47 yards, yet managed to lose 24-6 due to an avalanche of five turnovers. Instead of folding, Pittsburgh closed the regular season with three consecutive wins, including a gritty 17-7 Monday night triumph over the eventual champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In the postseason, the Steelers orchestrated a legendary Wild Card comeback against the rival Cleveland Browns, erasing a 17-point deficit to win 36-33 before bowing out in a 34-31 heartbreaking overtime divisional loss to the Tennessee Titans. The legacy of the 2002 squad endures as the year Pittsburgh modernized its offensive philosophy. The team was showered with accolades, headlined by Maddox winning the AP Comeback Player of the Year award, while Alan Faneca and Porter earned First-team All-Pro honors, cementing this transition era as a critical bridge to the franchise’s future era of dominance.
