Season Review
New York Jets 2020
The 2020 New York Jets season was pure agony. Watching it felt like sitting through a four-hour movie where the projector kept breaking, but every time they fixed it, the film somehow got worse. Entering the season with cautious hopes that third-year quarterback Sam Darnold would take a massive leap under head coach Adam Gase, the Jets instead cratered into total irrelevance. Offseason free agent additions like center Connor McGovern and tackle George Fant were brought in to stabilize a leaky offensive line, but the team simply could not find any traction. New York finished last in the AFC East with an abysmal 2-14 record, completely missing the postseason and securing their place as one of the least competitive rosters in franchise history.
To say the offense was broken would be an insult to things that are merely broken; this unit was entirely non-functional. The Jets ranked dead last in the NFL in both points scored with 243 (15.2 ppg) and total yards gained with 4,479, numbers that look like typos in the modern era. Darnold missed four games and struggled immensely when healthy, throwing for just 2,208 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions across his 12 starts. Gase trotted out a 37-year-old Frank Gore to lead the ground game, and while Gore gutted out 653 rushing yards on 187 carries, the offense lacked any real explosiveness. Wide receiver Jamison Crowder was the lone bright spot in the passing game, hauling in 59 receptions for 699 yards and six scores, but the balanced attack was mostly balanced in its inability to move the chains.
Defensively, things were marginally better but still deeply compromised, as the Jets surrendered 457 points (28.6 ppg) to rank 26th in scoring defense and 24th in total yards allowed. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams tried to manufacture pressure, but the secondary was routinely torched, giving up 4,409 yards through the air. Second-year defensive end Quinnen Williams showed real star potential by anchoring the trenches with a team-high seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss, while linebacker Neville Hewitt racked up a staggering 134 combined tackles. In the secondary, safety Marcus Maye did his best to hold the line with two interceptions and 11 passes defended, but the unit simply spent too much time on the field due to the offense’s constant three-and-outs.
The arc of this season was defined by a historic, soul-crushing 13-game losing streak to start the year, featuring a handful of non-competitive blowouts and one infamous meltdown against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 13. Leading late in the fourth quarter, Williams called an all-out blitz that left cornerback Lamar Jackson isolated against Henry Ruggs III for a game-winning 46-yard touchdown, a play so baffling it got Williams fired the next morning. Just when a 0-16 season felt inevitable, the Jets pulled off back-to-back stunning upsets in December. They shocked the Los Angeles Rams 23-20 on the road in Week 15 and followed it up with a 23-16 victory over the Cleveland Browns, snapping their epic skid but ultimately alienating a fanbase desperate for the top draft pick.
By winning those two games, the Jets famously blew their chance at the number one overall pick and the rights to generational quarterback prospect Trevor Lawrence, a twist of fate that will heavily define the legacy of this squad. The significance of the 2020 team is firmly rooted in the end of the Gase era, as the head coach was swiftly dismissed immediately following a Week 17 loss to the New England Patriots. No individual players took home major league awards, and high-profile draft pick Mekhi Becton’s promising rookie season at tackle was overshadowed by the organizational dysfunction. In the end, the 2020 Jets left behind a stark reminder of how quickly an NFL franchise can bottom out when leadership and execution completely diverge.
