Season Review
New York Jets 2002
Look at the 2002 New York Jets season if you want to relive the ultimate test of modern football fandom. Entering the year with modest expectations under second-year head coach Herm Edwards, the Jets brought in defensive help by signing free agent linebacker Sam Cowart and defensive end Steve White, while adding depth in the draft with pass rusher Bryan Thomas and interior lineman Jonathan Goodwin. They also Upgraded the center position with Pro Bowler Kevin Mawae. Nobody saw a division crown coming when the season dissolved into an absolute dumpster fire by late September. Starting quarterback Vinny Testaverde struggled to a 1-3 start, dropping ugly blowout games to New England and Miami, leaving Gang Green buried alive at 1-4 heading into an early Week 6 bye. Just when everyone was ready to pivot to draft position, Edwards flipped the script, ignited an unimaginable midseason resurgence, and rode a 9-7 regular season record all the way to an AFC East title.
Everything changed when Edwards finally handed the keys to 26-year-old Chad Pennington. The kid did not just stabilize the position; he put on an absolute clinic in efficiency, completing 68.9 percent of his passes for 3,120 yards, 22 touchdowns and only six interceptions to finish with a league leading 104.2 passer rating. Pennington masterfully operated a precise, balanced attack that ranked 15th in points (22.4 ppg) and 17th in passing yards. He leaned heavily on lightning-quick receiver Laveranues Coles, who hauled in 89 receptions for 1,264 yards and five touchdowns, while veteran slot machine Wayne Chrebet added 51 catches and nine touchdowns. Meanwhile, future Hall of Fame running back Curtis Martin ground out 1,094 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground despite playing through injuries, keeping defenses honest while Pennington carved them up.
Defensively, the Jets were a fascinating mix of bend-but-don't-break resilience, finishing 14th in points allowed (21.0 ppg) but coughing up chunks of yardage to rank 24th overall. The entire unit revolved around a ferocious young pass rush led by right defensive end John Abraham, who terrorized opposing tackles to the tune of 10.0 sacks and earned a Pro Bowl nod. Up front, tackle Josh Evans added interior push with 6.0 sacks, while the newly acquired Sam Cowart flew sideline to sideline to rack up a team-high 127 combined tackles. In the secondary, veteran cornerback Donnie Abraham anchored the coverage with four interceptions, compensating for a defensive unit that struggled heavily against the run but specialized in making crucial stops inside the red zone when games hung in the balance.
If you trace the turning points of this rollercoaster journey, it all goes back to the post-bye resuscitation. After a crushing 24-21 loss to Cleveland left them at 2-5, the Jets caught fire, unleashing a crucial four-game winning streak that included blowing the doors off San Diego 44-13 and clamping down on Miami 13-10. A brutal late-season road slip against the Bears in Week 15 threatened to derail the entire campaign, but the Jets responded like seasoned heavyweights. They closed out December with a masterful 30-17 road revenge win over Tom Brady's Patriots, followed by a spectacular 42-17 dismantling of Brett Favre's Green Bay Packers in the season finale to miraculously secure the AFC East tiebreaker over New England and Miami.
In the postseason, the magic peaked on Wild Card Saturday when the Jets hosted Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts and completely embarrassed them in a historical 41-0 shutout blowout, driven by an offense that outgained Indy with 396 total yards. The ride ultimately ended the next week in a 30-10 Divisional Round defeat against the eventual AFC champion Oakland Raiders, but the legacy of this squad remains completely unshakeable in New York lore. This team proved that a season is never truly over until it is over. It gave birth to the iconic phrase, ‘You play to win the game!'
