Season Review
New York Jets 2012
The 2012 New York Jets season entered with undercurrents of media circus, finishing with a dismal 6-10 record to place third in the AFC East. Coming off a disappointing 2011 campaign, head coach Rex Ryan attempted to rejuvenate the roster by signing notable free agents like LaRon Landry, Yeremiah Bell, and Chaz Schilens, alongside drafting linebacker Demario Davis. However, the headline of the offseason was the polarizing acquisition of Tim Tebow, creating an immediate quarterback controversy. Ultimately, the circus atmosphere swallowed the team whole, leading to a missed postseason and the unraveling of the Ryan-Mark Sanchez era.
Offensively, the Jets were an unmitigated disaster, ranking 28th in points scored (17.6 ppg) and 30th in total yards. Mark Sanchez started 15 games, throwing for 2,883 yards with 13 touchdowns against a crippling 18 interceptions, posting a bleak 66.9 passer rating. The running game relied heavily on Shonn Greene, who managed 1,063 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, but averaged a meager 3.9 yards per carry. Jeremy Kerley emerged as the lone functional passing target with 827 receiving yards, as the offense lacked explosive options, especially after Santonio Holmes suffered a season-ending injury in Week 4.
Despite the offensive ineptitude, Rex Ryan still coached up a highly competitive defensive unit that ranked second in passing yards allowed and eighth in total defense. Safeties LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell brought immense physicality to the secondary, with Landry racking up 100 total tackles and forcing four fumbles to earn a Pro Bowl nod. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie also secured a Pro Bowl selection, stepping up as a true shutdown corner after Darrelle Revis went down with a torn ACL early in the year. Up front, Muhammad Wilkerson led the pass rush with 5.0 sacks and 12 quarterback hits, but the run defense struggled heavily, ranking 26th in rushing yards surrendered.
Key moments throughout the season highlighted the team's slow-motion collapse, beginning with a deceptive 48-28 blowout win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. The defining turning point arrived on Thanksgiving night against the rival New England Patriots, an embarrassing 49-19 primetime blowout featuring the infamous 'Butt Fumble' where Sanchez collided with his own offensive lineman. While a brief two-game winning streak against Arizona and Jacksonville in December offered a faint glimmer of playoff hope, it evaporated with a miserable five-turnover performance by Sanchez in a 14-10 Monday Night Football loss to the Tennessee Titans.
The legacy of the 2012 New York Jets remains etched in NFL history as the definitive cautionary tale of style over substance. The team individual honors were limited to Pro Bowl nods for Cromartie and Landry, while the year overall marked the end of the competitive window built during their back-to-back AFC Championship appearances. Historically, this squad is remembered less for its stat lines and more for the overwhelming dysfunction that eventually forced a total organizational reboot in the ensuing offseasons.
