Season Review
New York Jets 2015
The 2015 New York Jets season was a classic exercise in heartbreak, culminating in a 10-6 record and a second-place finish in the AFC East. Entering the year, expectations were high for rookie head coach Todd Bowles following an aggressive offseason shopping spree orchestrated by general manager Mike Maccagnan. The front office notably brought back elite cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie while signing safety Marcus Gilchrist, cornerback Buster Skrine, guard James Carpenter, and veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Despite the massive roster upgrade, the campaign ended in catastrophic fashion on the final day of the regular season, leaving the Jets just short of a wild-card berth.
Offensively, the Jets transformed from an unwatchable unit into a surprisingly explosive group that ranked 11th in the league in points scored (24.2 ppg) and 10th in total yards. Fitzpatrick took over the starting quarterback job under bizarre circumstances during training camp and delivered a career year, throwing for 3,905 yards and a franchise-record 31 touchdowns. He was aided by a dominant receiver duo; Brandon Marshall hauled in 109 receptions for 1,502 yards and 14 scores, while Eric Decker added 80 catches for 1,027 yards and 12 touchdowns. On the ground, physical running back Chris Ivory balanced out the passing attack by rushing for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl honors alongside Marshall.
Defensively, Bowles constructed a formidable unit that ranked fourth in total yards allowed and ninth in points surrendered (19.6 ppg). The defense excelled on third downs and was exceptional at limiting the amount of opponent first downs allowed, fueled by a ferocious front seven that suffocated opposing ground games to finish second in rushing yards allowed. Star defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson anchored the pass rush with a team-high 12 sacks, while rookie first-round draft pick Leonard Williams made an immediate impact with three sacks and 21 quarterback hits. In the backfield, the returning Revis recaptured his shutdown form to pull down five interceptions and recover four fumbles.
The turning point of the campaign arrived during a blistering five-game winning streak in December that pushed the Jets to a 10-5 record. The streak featured a 23-20 overtime victory against the cross-stadium rival New York Giants and a thrilling 26-20 overtime triumph over the division-champion New England Patriots in Week 16. However, this momentum came to a sudden halt in the Week 17 finale against former head coach Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills. Needing a victory to secure a playoff spot, Fitzpatrick threw three fourth-quarter interceptions in a brutal 22-17 defeat that shattered New Yorkβs postseason dreams.
Because of that final collapse, the legacy of the 2015 Jets is defined by what could have been, as they became one of the few 10-win squads in the era to miss the playoffs. Historically, this team remains a fascinating anomaly in franchise history, representing the absolute peak of the Fitzpatrick era before the roster aged out. Individual recognitions were plentiful, with Marshall, Ivory, Wilkerson, and Revis earning Pro Bowl selections, while Leonard Williams finished third in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. This group provided one of the most entertaining and painful single-season rides in recent New York sports history.
