Season Review
New York Jets 2008
The 2008 New York Jets season was an NFL soap opera, defined by a stunning late-summer trade that brought legendary 39-year-old quarterback Brett Favre out of retirement and onto Broadway. Entering the third year of the Eric Mangini era, expectations skyrocketed with a massive veteran spending spree that yielded heavyweights like Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, and Calvin Pace. The investment initially looked genius as the revamped Jets surged to an 8-3 start, controlling their own destiny in the AFC East. However, a catastrophic December collapse ultimately left the Jets at 9-7, finishing third in the division and missing the postseason entirely, which cost Mangini his head coaching job.
Offensively, New York operated with a surprisingly balanced approach that finished 9th in the league in scoring with 405 points (25.3 ppg). While Favre threw for 3,472 yards and 22 touchdowns, his performance was a double-edged sword; he led the league with 23 interceptions, severely hampering the team’s overall efficiency. Fortunately, the ground game was dynamic behind Pro Bowl running back Thomas Jones, who carried the offense with 1,312 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Wideouts Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles provided reliable veteran targets on the perimeter, combining for 12 receiving touchdowns and helping to mask a passing attack that was plagued by turnovers.
On the other side of the ball, the Jets defense finished 18th in points allowed (22.3 ppg) but proved formidable against the run, ranking 7th in the NFL by allowing just 1,518 yards on the ground. Nose tackle Kris Jenkins earned Pro Bowl honors as a dominant force in the middle, while linebackers Calvin Pace and Eric Barton provided consistent pressure and tackling depth. The real story, however, was in the secondary, where sophomore cornerback Darrelle Revis emerged as a legitimate superstar, securing five interceptions and a Pro Bowl nod. Rookie corner Dwight Lowery also contributed significantly to a unit that excelled at forcing fumbles and generated 40 total sacks.
New York’s season was a tale of two entirely different acts, highlighted by a dominant five-game winning streak through November. The pinnacle of the season arrived in Weeks 11 and 12, when the Jets secured a thrilling 34-31 overtime victory over the rival New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football, followed by a convincing 34-13 dismantling of the previously undefeated Tennessee Titans. At 8-3, the Jets looked like legitimate Super Bowl contenders. The turning point arrived immediately after, triggered by a torn biceps tendon in Favre’s throwing arm. The Jets collapsed down the stretch, dropping four of their final five games, including a brutal 13-3 loss to a weak Seattle Seahawks team and a devastating 24-17 season-ending defeat to the Miami Dolphins.
The legacy of the 2008 Jets remains tethered to what could have been if Favre had stayed healthy. Though the season ended in disappointment, it showcased dynamic individual campaigns, with versatile running back Leon Washington earning first-team All-Pro honors as a kick returner alongside Pro Bowl selections for Favre, Jones, Revis, Jenkins, Mangold and Faneca. Ultimately, this squad is remembered as one of the most talented teams in franchise history to miss the playoffs, serving as a cautionary tale of placing short-term championship hopes on an aging superstar. The collapse cleared the deck for the Rex Ryan era just one year later.
