Season Review
New York Jets 2019
The 2019 New York Jets season was supposed to be a grand awakening. Armed with a blank checkbook, the front office imported star running back LeVeon Bell and standard-bearing linebacker CJ Mosley to accelerate the growth of franchise quarterback Sam Darnold. To oversee it all, they hired supposed quarterback whisperer Adam Gase. Instead, reality hit like a sledgehammer. The Jets staggered to a 7-9 finish, landing third in the AFC East. While a late-season rally saved face, the campaign was ultimately defined by an catastrophic 1-7 opening act, heavily derailed by early injuries and an infamous medical diagnosis that turned the first half of the year into a true comedy of errors.
Offensively, the Gase experiment was an unmitigated disaster. The unit ranked dead last in total yards and 31st in scoring, averaging a pathetic 276 points (17.3 ppg) on the year. Darnold missed three early games after contracting a bizarre, headline-grabbing case of mononucleosis, and the offense completely flatlined under backups Trevor Siemian and Luke Falk. Darnold finished with 3024 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in his 13 starts, occasionally flashing brilliance but often looking completely unprotected. Behind a porous line, Bell found absolutely no room to operate, averaging a miserable 3.2 yards per carry for 789 yards. Slot machine Jamison Crowder was the lone consistent safety valve, pacing the team with 78 receptions and 833 yards, while Robbie Chosen chipped in 779 yards as a vertical threat.
If the offense was a train wreck, Gregg Williamsโ defense was the only thing keeping the franchise tethered to competitive football. The Jets finished a highly respectable seventh in total yards allowed and featured an elite run defense that ranked second in the league, giving up just 3.3 yards per carry. First-team All-Pro safety Jamal Adams was an absolute heat-seeking missile, leading the team with 6.5 sacks from the defensive backfield while forcing two fumbles. Up front, veteran Steve McLendon and rookie defensive tackle Quinnen Williams anchored a brutal interior, while linebacker Jordan Jenkins provided a team-high 8.0 sacks. Free-agent cornerback Brian Poole also excelled in the slot, contributing 59 tackles and an interception returned for a touchdown.
Looking back at the schedule, the season divides cleanly into two distinct realities. The first half was an unwatchable nightmare, punctuated by a 33-0 Monday night annihilation by the New England Patriots where Darnold was caught on a microphone confessing he was 'seeing ghosts'. The rock-bottom moment arrived in Week 9 with a 26-18 loss to a previously winless Miami Dolphins squad. Yet, just as fans prepared to completely pack it in, the Jets flipped the script. They rattled off a three-game winning streak against the Giants, Redskins, and Raiders, scoring 34 points in each contest. They closed the year winning six of their final eight games, including a gritty 16-10 defensive battle against the Steelers and a 13-6 finale over the playoff-bound Bills.
A 7-9 record meant missing the postseason for the ninth consecutive year, leaving the Jets with nothing but a bittersweet legacy of what-ifs. There were no major individual awards beyond Jamal Adams making the Pro Bowl and All-Pro rosters. In the grander historical context, the 2019 season is remembered as a classic Jets mirage. The late-season surge provided just enough fool's gold to justify keeping Gase for another year, delaying an inevitable rebuild and leaving fans to wonder how a season with so much expensive veteran talent evaporated before the autumn leaves could even fall.
