Season Review
New York Jets 2006
Nobody expected anything from the 2006 New York Jets after a miserable 4-12 campaign. Breaking in a 35-year-old rookie head coach in Eric Mangini, the consensus pointed to a painful rebuilding cycle. Instead, Mangini instilled a disciplined culture that completely defied expectations, guiding the team to a surprising 10-6 record and a second-place finish in the AFC East. The turnaround was fueled by an exceptional draft class that secured foundational linemen D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold, alongside dynamic rookie back Leon Washington. Free agents like Andre Dyson and Kimo von Oelhoffen added veteran stability. Ticketed for a top-five draft pick, this overachieving squad instead concluded the regular season with an improbable trip to the postseason as an AFC wild card.
The offensive engine ran on the grit of Chad Pennington, who claimed the AP Comeback Player of the Year award. Behind his improved line, Pennington started all 16 games, throwing for 3,352 yards and 17 touchdowns with an efficient 64.5% completion rate. While the unit lacked explosive downfield elements, ranking 18th in points scored (19.8 ppg) and 25th in total yards, it excelled at ball control. Pennington leaned on wideouts Laveranues Coles, who racked up 91 receptions for 1,098 yards, and Jerricho Cotchery, who exploded for 961 yards. Rookie Washington led the ground game with 650 rushing yards, while Kevan Barlow punched in six short-yardage scores in a run first system.
Defensively, the Jets adopted a bend-but-dont-break philosophy that got results when it mattered. The unit finished ranked 6th in points allowed (18.4 ppg) despite giving up massive real estate, ranking 20th in total yards surrendered. Linebacker Jonathan Vilma was the heart of the defense with 117 tackles, while Bryan Thomas enjoyed a career year with a team-high 8.5 sacks. The true breakout star was safety Kerry Rhodes, who earned second-team All-Pro honors with 99 tackles, five sacks, and four interceptions. Complemented by Andre Dyson's four picks, the defense relied on elite red-zone execution and timely takeaways to mask a run defense that surrendered a hefty 4.6 yards per carry.
The season was a wild ride featuring catastrophic lows and defining highs. The lowest point came in Week 5, a humiliating 41-0 drubbing by Jacksonville. However, the turning point arrived in Week 10 at Foxborough. Mangini out-schemed his former mentor Bill Belichick in a gritty 17-14 victory over the Patriots, establishing legitimate playoff credentials. After a subsequent shutout loss to Chicago left them at 5-5, the Jets found their stride. They won five of their final six games, including a critical road win over Minnesota and a soggy Christmas night triumph against Miami, before capping the year by beating Oakland 23-3 to seal their postseason ticket.
The ride ended in the Wild Card round, where the Patriots exacted revenge in a 37-16 victory. Despite 300 passing yards from Pennington and a spectacular 77-yard touchdown to Cotchery, New York could not match New England's postseason execution. Historically, 2006 represents the peak of the short-lived 'Mangenius' era before locker room fatigue unraveled the regime. More importantly, it laid the structural foundation for the franchise's late-2000s success, proving that a team built on smart drafting could punch above its weight. Justin Miller's elite special teams play, featuring two kickoff return touchdowns, capped a year that remains a memorable overachieving chapter in Jets history.
