Season Review
New York Jets 2014
The 2014 New York Jets season was a grueling exercise in despair, culminating in a dismal 4-12 record and a last-place finish in the AFC East. Entering the year, expectations were mildly optimistic that head coach Rex Ryan could recapture his postseason magic after general manager John Idzik added high-profile free agents like receiver Eric Decker and veteran running back Chris Johnson. Instead, the campaign disintegrated into a weekly referendum on a deeply flawed roster construct, ultimately resulting in the firing of both Ryan and Idzik immediately after the regular-season finale.
Offensively, the Jets were nearly unwatchable, finishing 28th in points scored (17.7 ppg) and dead last in passing yards per game. Second-year quarterback Geno Smith slogged through a brutal development phase, throwing 13 touchdowns against 13 interceptions while being benched midseason for a past-his-prime Michael Vick. Free-agent addition Eric Decker gave a valiant effort, racking up 74 receptions for 962 yards and five touchdowns, but he spent most of the year operating as the solitary functional threat in a painfully predictable, run-heavy scheme. Ground production was the lone offensive bright spot, with Chris Ivory chewing up 821 yards and six touchdowns on 198 physical carries, alongside Johnson adding 663 yards out of the backfield.
While the offense stalled, Rex Ryan still coaxed a top-tier performance out of his defensive front, guiding the unit to a number six ranking in total yards allowed. Up front, the imposing Sons of Anarchy defensive line anchored the squad, with defensive end Sheldon Richardson earning Pro Bowl honors after stacking 8.0 sacks and 21 quarterback hits. Muhammad Wilkerson added 6.0 sacks in 13 games, while elite inside linebackers David Harris and Demario Davis both surpassed 110 combined tackles. However, this dominant front seven could not mask a catastrophically thin secondary that intercepted a league-low six passes all year, constantly exposing the defense to deep aerial strikes.
The turning point of this painful campaign arrived via a crushing eight-game losing streak that buried the season before November even started. The spiral featured soul-crushing moments, including a 31-0 shutout blowout loss against the San Diego Chargers and an agonizing 27-25 prime-time defeat to the rival New England Patriots. The lone bright spot of the autumn occurred in Week 10, when the defense forced four turnovers to upset the playoff-bound Pittsburgh Steelers 20-13 and temporarily halt the bleeding.
With no postseason football on the horizon, the legacy of the 2014 Jets centers strictly on transition and the close of an era in franchise history. Despite the organizational turmoil, Geno Smith finished his season on a bizarrely historic note in Week 17, posting a perfect 158.3 passer rating by throwing for 390 yards and three scores to beat the Miami Dolphins 37-24. That fleeting offensive explosion served as a strange final chapter for Rex Ryan, who left New York with his trademark defensive identity intact but his offense completely depleted.
