Defensively, the Jets showed real grit, ranking 12th in total yards allowed despite placing 23rd in points allowed (22.2 ppg) due to constant short fields. Edge rusher John Abraham was a force, racking up 10.5 sacks and six forced fumbles. Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma anchored the unit, earning Pro Bowl honors with a phenomenal 173 total tackles. In the secondary, rookie safety Kerry Rhodes stood out with 106 tackles, while Ty Law enjoyed a brilliant individual season, snaring a league leading 10 interceptions to secure a Pro Bowl nod.

The season pivoted entirely during that tragic Week 3 overtime loss to Jacksonville. Though the Jets scraped to a 2-3 record after beating Tampa Bay in Week 5, the quarterback void eventually triggered a crushing seven-game losing streak. The low points were back-to-back road embarrassments: a 30-3 beatdown by Carolina and a 27-0 shutout in Denver. A late December win over Oakland provided minor relief, but the season was already lost.

Missing the playoffs, this squad remains a giant ‘what if’ in franchise history. It marked the final ride for Curtis Martin, who retired as one of the game's all-time rushing kings, and the end for Herm Edwards, who left for Kansas City. While Vilma and Law provided Pro Bowl brilliance, the 2005 Jets were ultimately undone by a quarterback curse that destroyed a playoff-caliber roster.
