Season Review
New York Jets 2007
After the surprising 2006 playoff run, the 2007 season was supposed to be the year the Jets solidified their status as a contender under Eric Mangini. Instead, the franchise collapsed to a 4-12 record, finishing third in the AFC East and miles away from the postseason. The front office had been aggressive in the offseason, notably bringing in running back Thomas Jones to anchor the ground game, while using their draft capital to secure future defensive cornerstones in Darrelle Revis and David Harris. Despite these roster upgrades, the team never established a coherent identity, suffering from inconsistent quarterback play and a defense that struggled to stop the run, effectively ending the goodwill from the previous year in one swift, disappointing campaign.
The offensive unit was a revolving door of mediocrity, finishing 25th in scoring (16.8 ppg) and 26th in total yards. Quarterback duties were split between Chad Pennington, who threw for 1,765 yards and 10 touchdowns before injuries and ineffectiveness took hold, and Kellen Clemens, who struggled to gain traction with a 52.0 completion percentage and 10 interceptions. The ground game relied heavily on Thomas Jones, who managed 1,119 rushing yards, but the team's inability to find the end zone was damning. Jerricho Cotchery was the lone bright spot, posting a productive 1,130 receiving yards, yet the offense as a whole was stifled by frequent turnovers and an inability to sustain drives, ultimately ranking 25th in passing yards and 19th in rushing yards.
Defensively, the Jets failed to impose their will, finishing 19th in points allowed (22.2 ppg) and 18th in total yards allowed. While the unit struggled to consistently pressure quarterbacks, they did see encouraging developments from younger players. Safety Kerry Rhodes was a ballhawk, recording five interceptions and 68 tackles, while rookie standout Darrelle Revis showed flashes of his future dominance with three interceptions and 88 tackles. David Harris led the team with 126 tackles and added five sacks, showcasing the intensity that would eventually define the unit. Despite these individual efforts, the defense struggled against the run, allowing 2,156 yards on the ground and finishing 29th in that department, which repeatedly left the team in unfavorable game situations.
The season was effectively over before it began, with an ugly 38-14 loss to the Patriots in the opener setting a bleak tone for the remainder of the year. The team limped to a 1-7 record at the midpoint, failing to establish any semblance of momentum until late in the schedule. There were fleeting moments of competency, most notably a 40-13 thrashing of the Miami Dolphins in Week 13 and an overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11. However, these sporadic wins were sandwiched between long, agonizing stretches of losses, including a 34-3 blowout at the hands of the Cowboys and a frustrating Week 15 loss to New England, which highlighted just how far the gap had widened between the Jets and the AFC elite.
Missing the playoffs was a foregone conclusion by December, and the 2007 season is best remembered as a significant step backward for the Eric Mangini era. While it was a harsh reality check after the 2006 overachievement, the season did succeed in one vital area: it laid the personnel foundation for future success. Drafting Revis and Harris turned out to be a masterclass in talent acquisition that would serve the franchise for years to come. Ultimately, 2007 served as a bridge year, a difficult but necessary period of transition where the team had to weather the struggles of a young roster while waiting for their future stars to fully mature into the core that would eventually reshape the team's identity.
