Season Review
New York Jets 1998
The 1998 New York Jets season remains one of the most electrifying and agonizing chapters in franchise history. Coming off a 9-7 campaign, the expectations in East Rutherford were sky-high with legendary head coach Bill Parcells entering his second year at the helm. Parcells completely altered the team's trajectory by orchestrating a masterclass of an offseason, bringing in heavy-hitting free agents like quarterback Vinny Testaverde, center Kevin Mawae, and star running back Curtis Martin, while leaning on rookie tackle Jason Fabini to solidify the line. Despite a brutal 0-2 start, the Jets caught lightning in a bottle to finish with a franchise-record 12-4 regular season record, capturing their first AFC East division title since the AFL-NFL merger.
Offensively, the Jets transformed into an efficient juggernaut under Parcells, finishing fifth in the league in points scored with 416 (26.0 ppg) and fourth in total yards with 5,715. After Glenn Foley started the first three games, the 35-year-old Testaverde took over and enjoyed a career-best renaissance, throwing for 3,256 yards and 29 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions for a stellar 101.6 passer rating. The attack was brilliantly balanced; Martin ground down opponents with 1,287 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns on 369 carries, while a dynamic receiving duo emerged. Pro Bowler Keyshawn Johnson caught 83 passes for 1,131 yards and 10 touchdowns, while the dependable Wayne Chrebet matched him stride for stride, pulling down 75 receptions for 1,083 yards and 8 scores.
On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Al Groh deployed a rugged, opportunistic unit that ranked second in the NFL in points allowed, giving up a stingy 266 points (16.6 ppg), and seventh in total yards surrendered. The defense was anchored by All-Pro linebacker Mo Lewis, who stuffed stat sheets with 81 combined tackles and 7.0 sacks. The pass rush possessed multiple teeth, as Bryan Cox chipped in 6.0 sacks and linebacker Chad Cascadden logged 5.0. In the secondary, safety Victor Green led the team with 92 tackles and snagged 4 interceptions, while shutdown cornerback Aaron Glenn paced the unit with 6 interceptions, making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks and helping the Jets secure 30 total turnovers on the year.
The defining turning point of the season arrived after a disappointing Week 6 road loss to the St. Louis Rams dropped the team to 2-3. What followed was a furious stretch where the Jets won 10 of their final 11 games. The streak ignited on Monday Night Football in Week 7 with a statement 24-14 road victory over rival New England. Over the final two months of the season, Parcells had his squad playing flawless football, dispatching divisional foes at will and crushing the Patriots again in the regular season finale, 31-10, to secure a first-round playoff bye and ensure the road to the Super Bowl went through any team but New England in the AFC East.
In the postseason, the Jets dismantled the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-24 in the Divisional Round, putting them one win away from their first Super Bowl appearance in thirty years. However, their magical run died in the altitude of Mile High Stadium during the AFC Championship Game, where a devastating third-quarter collapse saw a 10-0 lead dissolve into a 23-10 loss against the eventual champion Denver Broncos. The legacy of the 1998 squad endures as an elite powerhouse. Testaverde turned back time to finish 3rd in the Comeback Player of the Year award, and Parcells proved his genius once more, leaving a benchmark of modern Jets excellence that has rarely been matched since.
