Season Review

Miami Dolphins 2023

The 2023 Miami Dolphins season was a high-octane ride that proved Mike McDaniel’s track-meet offense was the most terrifying show on turf, right up until the winter cold came knocking. Entering the year with massive expectations after bolstering the defense with blockbuster cornerback Jalen Ramsey and sneaky free-agent additions like linebacker David Long Jr., Miami intended to usurp the AFC East throne. For most of the campaign, they looked like the class of the conference, riding an electric wave of speed to an 11-6 record. However, a late-season stumble cost them the division crown, forcing them to finish second behind the Buffalo Bills. While they comfortably secured a playoff berth, the grand ambitions of a deep postseason run ultimately dissolved in the freezing elements of Kansas City. It was a season defined by historic highs and frustratingly familiar late-season road bumps.

To understand this offense, you have to look at the track stars McDaniel collected. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa silenced plenty of skeptics by starting all 17 games, leading the league with 4,624 passing yards while throwing 29 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. He operated with lightning-fast execution, feeding the dynamo that is Tyreek Hill, who racked up a staggering 1,799 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. When teams tried to blanket the perimeter, Miami punished them on the ground, finishing first in the league in rushing touchdowns with 27. Raheem Mostert had a career year at age 31, crossing the 1,000-yard mark and scoring a league-high 18 rushing touchdowns, while rookie speedster De'Von Achane averaged an absurd 7.8 yards per carry for 800 yards. Miami finished the regular season ranked first overall in total yards and second in points scored (29.2 ppg), unleashing an unapologetically explosive attack that left defensive coordinators gasping for air all autumn long.

On the other side of the ball, the defense finished tenth in total yards allowed but 22nd in points surrendered (23.0 ppg). The unit struggled early while awaiting the debut of Jalen Ramsey, who still managed to snag three interceptions in just ten games. The real teeth of this defense lay in a relentless pass rush that generated 56 sacks. Linebacker Bradley Chubb led the charge with 11 sacks and a spectacular six forced fumbles, while the D-Line duo of Zach Sieler and Christian Wilkins combined for an immense 19 sacks. Despite these individual standouts, the defense suffered from glaring consistency issues and devastating late-season injuries. When they were on, they suffocated opponents with opportunistic turnovers and a fierce front seven, but the secondary often found itself exposed against elite signal-callers when the pass rush could not get home.

The peak of Miami’s regular-season hysteria arrived in Week 3, a historic 70-20 demolition of the Denver Broncos where the Dolphins unleashed 726 total yards of offense. It was the type of video-game performance that made them the darlings of the football world. Yet, the turning points of the season were defined by their inability to beat heavyweights. Disastrous road losses to the Buffalo Bills in Week 4 and the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7 exposed a soft underbelly. The seasons collapse occurred in December; after a stunning Monday night choke against the Tennessee Titans, Miami limped into the final fortnight. They were absolutely obliterated 56-19 by the Baltimore Ravens before dropping the AFC East finale at home to the Bills, 21-14. A three-game lead in the division evaporated in the final month, transforming a potential top seed into a flawed road wild card.

That collapse sent the Dolphins straight into a frigid Arrowhead Stadium for a Wild Card matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, where the offense completely froze in a dismal 26-7 defeat. Tua was held to just 199 yards, and the explosive unit managed a lone touchdown to Tyreek Hill. Ultimately, the 2023 Dolphins will be remembered as an offensive sprinter that lacked the postseason stamina to finish the race. Statistically, it was a legendary run; Hill finished second in Offensive Player of the Year voting, and Mostert earned well-deserved Pro Bowl honors. The legacy of this squad is complicated. They proved that McDaniel’s scheme could break statistical calculators, but they also reinforced the narrative that South Beach speed melts when the calendar turns to January.
