Season Review

Miami Dolphins 2015

The 2015 Miami Dolphins season entered the year with massive expectations, highlighted by the blockbuster free-agent acquisition of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to a historic contract. Paired with new targets like tight end Jordan Cameron and first-round draft choice DeVante Parker, South Florida anticipated a definitive playoff breakthrough. Instead, the season imploded almost immediately. After an incredibly sluggish 1-3 start, head coach Joe Philbin was fired in early October following a lifeless performance in London against the division rival New York Jets. Tight ends coach Dan Campbell took over as interim head coach, injecting brief energy with his raw intensity, but the flaws of the roster ultimately yielded a disappointing 6-10 record and a last-place finish in the highly competitive AFC East.

Ryan Tannehill piloted an inconsistent, pass-heavy offensive attack that ranked a lowly 27th in points scored (19.4 ppg) and 26th in total yards across the league. Despite playing behind a fragile offensive line that surrendered 45 sacks, Tannehill started all 16 games and managed to throw for 4,208 yards and 24 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. The undisputed heartbeat of the passing game was wideout Jarvis Landry, who earned Pro Bowl honors by racking up a phenomenal 110 receptions for 1,157 yards and four touchdowns. In the backfield, running back Lamar Miller maximized his limited touches, averaging a highly efficient 4.5 yards per carry on his way to 872 rushing yards and eight scores, though fans and analysts routinely criticized the coaching staff for failing to establish a balanced, run-heavy identity.

Miami spent immense financial capital on defense, but the unit collapsed to 25th overall in total yards surrendered as opponents elected to constantly test the Dolphins run defense. While Suh commanded constant double-teams and recorded six sacks alongside 17 tackles for loss, the perimeter defense struggled heavily to contain intricate pass schemes. Defensive end Olivier Vernon served as a bright spot along the front seven, registering a team-high 7.5 sacks and an impressive 36 quarterback hits. The secondary relied almost entirely on ball-hawking free safety Reshad Jones, who put together a magnificent Pro Bowl campaign with a team-leading 135 combined tackles, five interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns, while veteran cornerback Brent Grimes added four interceptions of his own.

The year was defined by wild, emotional swings rather than steady execution. The team bottomed out during a brutal 41-14 home shellacking at the hands of Rex Ryan’s Buffalo Bills in Week 3, a game that sealed Philbin’s fate. Following the coaching change, Campbell sparked consecutive blowout victories over the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans, a stretch where the offense suddenly scored 38 and 44 points. However, reality returned during a prime-time Thursday night blowout loss against the New England Patriots, initiating a critical midseason collapse. Miami dropped four out of five matchups through November, completely neutralizing any positive momentum and eliminating the franchise from wild-card contention before December even arrived.

With no postseason football, the legacy of the 2015 Dolphins is remembered as an expensive cautionary tale regarding roster construction and coaching transition. The franchise missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season, forcing a total front-office reset in the ensuing spring. Despite the bleak team results, individual accolades remained intact as Jarvis Landry, Reshad Jones, Brent Grimes, and center Mike Pouncey all earned Pro Bowl recognition. Ultimately, this specific squad became a classic NFL reminder that putting together a collection of high-priced individual stars does not automatically build a cohesive team, closing out an era of missed opportunities in Miami.
