Season Review

Miami Dolphins 2017

Coming off a promising 10-6 playoff campaign, the 2017 Miami Dolphins had genuine expectations of building a sustained contender in the AFC East. Then training camp happened. Starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffered a season-ending ACL tear, sending head coach Adam Gase into panic mode and prompting a ten-million-dollar distress call to pull 34-year-old Jay Cutler out of a broadcasting retirement. Paired with high-priced free-agent addition linebacker Lawrence Timmons, guard Ted Larsen and safery Nate Allen, Gase hoped Cutler could recreate their shared Chicago magic. Instead, the roster felt like a mismatched collection of parts. The Dolphins ultimately staggered to a 6-10 finish, landing third in the division and missing the postseason as the Gase experiment regressed.

Offensively, Miami was an exercise in pure frustration, finishing 28th in points scored (17.6 ppg) and 25th in total yards. Forced into a pass-heavy approach with 602 attempts against just 360 rushes, Cutler delivered exactly what his reputation suggested: flashes of brilliance buried under maddening inconsistency, finishing with 2666 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions over 14 starts. The shining light was wideout Jarvis Landry, who earned a Pro Bowl nod by vacuuming up a staggering 112 receptions for 987 yards and nine scores. Kenny Stills added 847 yards as a deep threat, but the running game collapsed after Pro Bowl back Jay Ajayi was abruptly traded midseason to Philadelphia, leaving sophomore Kenyan Drake to salvage what he could with a team-high 644 rushing yards.

While the defense kept them competitive early, the unit lacked depth and wore down, ranking a dismal 29th in points allowed (24.6 ppg) despite a respectable 16th-place finish in total yards. Defensive coordinator Matt Burke relied heavily on the timeless Cameron Wake, who defied his 35 years to rack up a team-high 10.5 sacks and 27 quarterback hits. Next to him, Ndamukong Suh plugged the middle for 4.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss, while rookie defensive tackle Davon Godchaux showed flashes of future stability in five starts. Linebacker Kiko Alonso provided plenty of hitting power with 115 combined tackles, but the secondary was constantly under siege, heavily dependent on safety Reshad Jones, who earned a Pro Bowl bid with 122 tackles and two fumble-return touchdowns.

If you want to understand the erratic heartbeat of this team, just look at the schedule. Miami started hot by winning four of their first six games, highlighted by a gritty 20-17 road upset over the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. Then came the inevitable Cutler-era collapse: a brutal five-game losing streak through November that featured a humiliating 40-0 shutout by the Baltimore Ravens and a 45-21 shellacking by the Carolina Panthers. Just when fans threw in the towel, the Dolphins pulled off their game of the year in Week 14, stunning Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 27-20 on Monday Night Football behind three Cutler touchdowns. But true to form, they immediately followed that peak with three consecutive season-ending losses to the Bills and Chiefs.

With no playoff football the legacy of the 2017 Dolphins remains a cautionary tale about building on a shaky foundation. Aside from Pro Bowl honors for Landry and Jones, there were no individual awards, no historic milestones, and very little to celebrate. It was a bridge year that led to a dead end, exposing the depth issues that would eventually cost Gase his job a year later. For South Florida fans, this season is forever remembered as the surreal, smoking-gun winter where โ€˜Smokin Jayโ€™ Cutler briefly donned the aqua and orange, leaving behind a trail of what-if moments and an immediate return to the television booth.
