Season Review

Miami Dolphins 2012

The 2012 Miami Dolphins season arrived with an identity crisis, featuring a brand-new head coach in Joe Philbin and a mandate to rebuild. Transitioning away from the previous regime, the front office turned heads by drafting Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill eighth overall, while taking a gamble on free-agent cornerback Richard Marshall. HBO cameras captured every grueling minute of this transformation during training camp for Hard Knocks. Despite some late-season flashes of promise, the roster lacked the firepower to consistently compete in the AFC East. Miami finished with a 7-9 record, landing in second place within the division but ultimately missing the postseason for the fourth consecutive year.

Miami operated a fairly balanced, albeit toothless, offensive attack that ranked 27th in both total yards and points scored (18.0 ppg). Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill started all 16 games, showcasing plenty of toughness while throwing for 3,294 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. The passing game lacked dynamic threats, leaving slot receiver Davone Bess to grind out 778 yards, while Brian Hartline enjoyed a career year as the primary weapon, catching 74 passes for 1,083 yards. On the ground, Reggie Bush handled the bulk of the workload by rushing for 986 yards and six touchdowns on 227 carries, but a lack of red-zone efficiency capped the offense at just 13 passing touchdowns all year.

The real pulse of this team was a resilient defense orchestrated by Kevin Coyle, which finished an impressive seventh in points allowed (19.8 ppg) despite ranking 21st in total yards. Defensive end Cameron Wake put together a spectacular campaign, tormenting opposing offensive lines to rack up 15.0 sacks and earn first-team All-Pro honors. Inside linebacker Karlos Dansby cleaned up everything behind him, leading the roster with 134 combined tackles. While the pass defense surrendered far too much cushion in the secondary, the defensive front was imposing, anchoring a unit that gave up only 10 rushing touchdowns over the entire regular season.

The season unfolded as a sequence of agonizing near-misses and erratic streaks. A week 4 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals saw Tannehill explode for 431 passing yards, but four costly turnovers doomed the upset. Miami found its rhythm in October, stringing together a three-game winning streak that culminated in a dominant 30-9 road victory over the rival New York Jets to pull their record to 4-3. The momentum vanished instantly in November during a miserable three-game collapse, punctuated by a non-competitive 37-3 blowout loss against the Tennessee Titans. They briefly revived their fringe playoff hopes with a thrilling 24-21 win against the Seattle Seahawks in week 12, but an ugly 28-0 shutout loss to the New England Patriots in the finale put a definitive end to any positive vibes.

Because they missed the postseason, the 2012 Dolphins became a bridge squad rather than a memorable contender. The year is primarily remembered as the dawn of the Tannehill era and the rookie launching pad for future key contributors like Olivier Vernon and Lamar Miller. Individual excellence was recognized as Cameron Wake, Randy Starks, Richie Incognito, and long snapper John Denney all earned Pro Bowl nods. Ultimately, this team proved they could play spoiler, but their inability to win tight games confirmed they were still a few puzzle pieces away from truly threatening the heavyweights of the AFC.
