Season Review
Miami Dolphins 1999
The 1999 Miami Dolphins season arrived with massive expectations as head coach Jimmy Johnson aimed to push a veteran roster over the top. Fresh offseason acquisitions like veteran wideout Tony Martin and bruising guard Kevin Gogan underscored a win-now approach. However, the campaign transformed into a grueling, 9-7 grind through the AFC East. Despite a rocky late-season slide, Miami squeezed into the postseason as a wild-card entrant, giving their legendary franchise centerpieces one final crack at January football.
Offensively, the narrative was dictated by a forced changing of the guard. Legendary passer Dan Marino started 11 games, throwing for 2,448 yards and 12 touchdowns, but uncharacteristically tossed 17 interceptions under immense pressure. When an injury sidelined Marino, backup Damon Huard steadied the ship with a respectable 4-1 record as a starter, managing 1,288 yards and eight scores. Miami focused heavily on the air, dropping back for 589 pass attempts versus 445 rushes to finish 13th in scoring offense (20.4 ppg). Tony Martin proved worth the investment by racking up 1,037 receiving yards, while rookie J.J. Johnson spearheaded a sluggish ground game with 558 rushing yards.
While the offense searched for consistency, the defense remained the team backbone under Johnson. Miami ranked a stifling fifth in total yards allowed, anchored by an elite, opportunistic defensive backfield. Ball-hawking cornerback Sam Madison led the secondary with seven interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. In the trenches, defensive end Rich Owens wreaked havoc with a team-high 8.5 sacks, while fellow pass rusher Trace Armstrong provided a relentless push with 7.5 sacks of his own. Behind them, All-Pro middle linebacker Zach Thomas patrolled the field to register a team-best 134 combined tackles.
This roller-coaster season was defined by extreme streaks. The Dolphins roared out of the gate, highlighted by an explosive 38-21 Monday night thrashing of the Denver Broncos in Week 1 and a thrilling 34-31 shootout over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. Sitting pretty at 7-1 after blanking the Tennessee Titans, the wheels suddenly fell off. Miami suffered a brutal mid-season collapse, losing six of their last eight games, which included a disheartening shutout against Dallas and back-to-back losses to the New York Jets and Washington Redskins to close the schedule.
Despite the collapse, Miami captured a gutsy 20-17 wild-card victory over the Seattle Seahawks on the road. The ride came to a devastating end the following week in a historically ugly 62-7 divisional round blowout against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This game marked a somber milestone as the final professional appearance for team legend Dan Marino and Jimmy Johnson. Though the ending was bitter, the season featured elite individual showcases, with kicker Olindo Mare, Sam Madison, and Zach Thomas all earning first-team All-Pro honors.
