Season Review
Miami Dolphins 2019
The 2019 Miami Dolphins entered the year facing historically low expectations, with many predicting an 0-16 finish. Under rookie head coach Brian Flores, the front office aggressively gutted the roster for a long-term rebuild. Key arrivals included veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and safety Eric Rowe, alongside rookie defensive tackle Christian Wilkins. Predictably, the season began with historic blowouts, fueling intense national tanking narratives. Yet, instead of folding, Miami fought back to finish 5-11, placing fourth in the AFC East. While they missed the playoffs, the resilient culture Flores established completely redefined the franchise by season's end.
Offensively, Miami thrived on the chaotic magic of Ryan Fitzpatrick, who seized the job from Josh Rosen. Fitzpatrick threw for 3,529 yards and 20 touchdowns against 13 interceptions, while leading the team with 243 rushing yards. The Dolphins used a pass-heavy approach because they couldn't effectively run the ball with thier rushing attack generating a meager 1,156 yards. Despite no ground game, receiver DeVante Parker exploded for 72 catches, 1,202 yards, and nine touchdowns, while tight end Mike Gesicki added five scores. Though the offense finished 25th in points by scroing 306 on the season (19.1 ppg) and 27th in yards, they became highly dangerous late in the year.
Miami's defense was a construction zone, finishing dead last in points allowe - conceding 494 (30.9 ppg) - and 30th in yards. After trading safety Minkah Fitzpatrick early on, the young lineup took heavy lumps. Linebacker Jerome Baker showed promise with 126 tackles, while Davon Godchaux logged 75 stops. Rookie Andrew Van Ginkel showed late flashes, and Christian Wilkins logged two sacks, while undrafted corner Nik Needham recorded 11 passes defended. Despite a weak pass rush that produced just 23 sacks, the defense played with a relentless grit that kept the Dolphins competitive during the second half of the season.
The turning point arrived in Week 9, when Miami snapped a seven-game skid by beating the rival New York Jets 26-18. That win sparked a gritty 5-4 finish over their final nine games. Highlights included a 37-31 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13, featuring a trick-play touchdown pass from punter Matt Haack to kicker Jason Sanders, and a 38-35 overtime win against Cincinnati. These moments erased the sting of early embarrassments, like a 59-10 opening loss to Baltimore and a 43-0 shutout by New England, proving Flores' squad never quit.
Missing the playoffs was guaranteed, but their legacy was cemented in Week 17. Entering Foxborough as massive underdogs, Miami shocked the New England Patriots 27-24, stripping their rivals of a postseason bye. This legendary upset defined the 'Fitzmagic' era and proved that respectability beats tanking. While no Dolphin won individual league awards, the year was an undeniable coaching triumph. It established a foundation, preserved essential draft capital for their future franchise quarterback, and stands as a respected five-win season.
