Season Review
Miami Dolphins 2000
The 2000 Miami Dolphins season marked the dawn of a new era, serving as the official transition from the legendary Dan Marino to life under newly appointed head coach Dave Wannstedt. Entering the year with modest expectations after Marino retired, Miami defied the skeptics by compiling an impressive 11-5 record to secure first place in a highly competitive AFC East division. Wannstedt stabilized the franchise by building an identity centered on an punishing ground game and an elite defense. The team was fortified by key offseason free agent additions like quarterback Jay Fiedler and running back Lamar Smith, alongside rookie offensive tackle Todd Wade. This blue-collar formula paid off handsomely, returning the Dolphins to the postseason as a gritty, defensive-minded division champion that nobody wanted to play in December.
Offensively, the Dolphins shifted away from their historically pass-heavy attack to embrace a ground-and-pound system under Fiedler. The new starting quarterback provided steady management, throwing for 2,402 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 267 yards on the ground across 15 regular-season starts. The engine of the offense, however, was running back Lamar Smith, who logged a massive workload with 309 carries for 1,139 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. Veteran backup Thurman Thomas also brought veteran leadership to the backfield. Through the air, Oronde Gadsden emerged as the primary weapon, catching 56 passes for 786 yards and six scores. While the unit ranked 16th in points scored (20.2 ppg) and 26th in total yards, their complementary ball-control style maximized the roster strengths and shortened games.
The real story in South Florida was a terrifying defense that finished ranked 3rd in points allowed (14.1 ppg) and 6th in total yards. Miami created absolute havoc upfront, featuring a ferocious pass rush spearheaded by Jason Taylor, who racked up 14.5 sacks, and veteran edge rusher Trace Armstrong, who chipped in an extraordinary 16.5 sacks off the bench. Middle linebacker Zach Thomas anchored the second level with 99 combined tackles despite missing several games. In the secondary, the Dolphins boasted an opportunistic ball-hawking unit that led the entire NFL with 28 interceptions. Safety Brian Walker led the team with seven picks, while Pro Bowl cornerback Sam Madison, Patrick Surtain, and free safety Brock Marion each intercepted five passes. This suffocating group consistently masked any offensive shortfalls by forcing 41 total turnovers.
Key moments throughout the season tested the resilience of the Wannstedt squad. Miami set a dominant tone in Week 1 with a 23-0 shutout against Seattle and proved their legitimacy with a tight 19-6 victory over the eventual champion Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. A crushing 40-37 overtime collapse against the arch-rival New York Jets in Week 8 could have derailed their season, but the Dolphins responded by winning three straight games against the Packers, Lions and Chargers. After stumbling in back-to-back December contests against Tampa Bay and Indianapolis, the Dolphins faced a must-win situation in the regular-season finale. They traveled to Foxborough and ground out a dramatic 27-24 victory over the New England Patriots, executing a crucial fourth-quarter comeback to seal the division crown and guarantee a home playoff game.
In the wild card round, Lamar Smith secured his place in franchise lore by carrying the ball an exhausting 40 times for a postseason total of 209 yards, including the game-winning touchdown in a thrilling 23-17 overtime triumph against the Colts. The ride came to a crashing halt the following week in a brutal 27-0 divisional round shutout loss to the Oakland Raiders. Despite the bitter exit, the 2000 team left a lasting legacy as one of the finest defensive units in modern franchise history. Individual accolades validated their greatness, as Taylor and Madison earned first-team All-Pro honors, while Armstrong, Thomas, and Marion earned Pro Bowl nods, proving that Miami could remain elite even after the departure of its greatest icon.
