Season Review
Miami Dolphins 2013
The 2013 Miami Dolphins entered the year determined to smash a four-season playoff drought, signaling their intent by opening the checkbook in free agency. General manager Jeff Ireland made waves by signing marquee speedster Mike Wallace, alongside linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler, and cornerback Brent Grimes to fortify the defense. Under second-year head coach Joe Philbin, the team flashed early promise but ultimately could not escape the gravitational pull of mediocrity, finishing with an 8-8 record and third place in the AFC East. While they stayed in the hunt until the final weekend, a maddening lack of consistency ultimately derailed their postseason aspirations.
On offense, second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill shouldered a heavy burden, throwing for 3,913 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions while operating a pass-heavy but unimaginative passing scheme. Tannehill was under constant duress all year, as a fragile offensive line surrendered a league-high 58 sacks. Despite the relentless pressure, wide receiver Brian Hartline crossed the millennium mark with 1,016 receiving yards, and the high-priced Wallace chipped in 930 yards and 5 scores. Tight end Charles Clay emerged as a vital safety valve, recording 759 yards and 6 touchdowns, while Lamar Miller spearheaded a rushing attack with 709 yards and averaged 4.1 yards per carry but finished near the bottom of the league in total yardage.
While the offense sputtered to a 27th overall ranking in yards, the defense consistently kept Miami competitive, surrendering just 335 total points (20.9 ppg) to rank 8th in the league. The front seven possessed formidable pass-rushing teeth, led by defensive end Olivier Vernon, who racked up a team-high 11.5 sacks, and the explosive Cameron Wake, who generated 8.5 sacks en route to a Pro Bowl nod. In the secondary, safety Reshad Jones collected 107 tackles, while free-agent addition Brent Grimes was a lockdown revelation, securing 4 interceptions, seventeen pass deflections and a Pro Bowl selection. Although the run defense lagged behind at 24th in the league, the unit specialized in making timely stops and keeping games within striking distance.
This hot and cold campaign was defined by stark swings in momentum. Miami ignited out of the gate with a 3-0 start, highlighted by a thrilling 24-20 road win over Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts. The good vibes vanished during a four-game October slide, but the team revived its season on Halloween night with a overtime victory against the Cincinnati Bengals, sealed by a walk-off safety from Cameron Wake. A late-season surge saw the Dolphins win three straight in December, including a clutch 24-20 victory over the arch-rival New England Patriots, pushing Miami to 8-6 and putting control of their playoff destiny squarely in their own hands.
Needing just one win in the final two weeks to secure a postseason berth, the Dolphins collapsed when the stakes were highest. They were embarrassed on the road in a 19-0 shutout by the Buffalo Bills, followed by a dismal 20-7 home defeat to the New York Jets that extinguished their playoff hopes. The team took home no major individual hardware, though punter Brandon Fields joined Wake, Grimes, and center Mike Pouncey as Pro Bowlers. The 2013 squad is remembered as a talented but flawed collection that could beat anyone on a given Sunday, yet folded under pressure.
