Season Review
Miami Dolphins 2022
The 2022 Miami Dolphins season felt like a high-stakes Hollywood blockbuster that nearly flew off the rails. Entering the year with eccentric rookie head coach Mike McDaniel and a newly acquired superstar weapon in Tyreek Hill, South Florida became the epicenter of NFL intrigue. The Dolphins finished 9-8, securing second place in the AFC East and sneaking into the postseason for the first time since 2016. It was a season defined by extreme streaks, high-flying offensive innovation, and terrifying health scares that threatened to derail a promising new era. Through all the chaos, McDaniel proved his Shanahan-schooled scheme could translate immediately to winning football.
When Tua Tagovailoa was healthy, Miami boasted the most terrifying track-meet offense in football, finishing sixth in total yards and fourth in passing. Tagovailoa silenced skeptics in 13 starts, throwing for 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns, and leading the NFL with a 105.5 passer rating. He unlocked a historic receiving tandem; Hill racked up a staggering 119 receptions for 1,710 yards, while sophomore speedster Jaylen Waddle averaged 18.1 yards per catch for 1,356 yards at a monstrous 18.1 yards per reception. Supported by veteran free-agent back Raheem Mostert, who chipped in 891 rushing yards, this chunk-play machine ranked eleventh in scoring with 397 points (23.4 ppg), terrorizing opposing secondaries with historic pre-snap motion.
While the offense grabbed headlines, Josh Boyer’s defense was a chaotic, injury-depleted unit that finished twenty-fourth in points allowed, giving up 23.5 per contest. Despite ranking twenty-seventh against the pass, the front seven was a wall, finishing fourth in rushing yards allowed behind a career year from defensive end Christian Wilkins, who logged 98 tackles and 16 tackles for loss. Edge rusher Jaelan Phillips provided a fierce pass rush with 7.0 sacks and 25 quarterback hits, while mid-season trade acquisition Bradley Chubb added reinforcement. In the secondary, safety Jevon Holland anchored the defense with 96 tackles and two interceptions alongside veteran Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard.
Miami’s schedule read like a cardiac monitor. They roared out to a 3-0 start, highlighted by a frantic 42-38 comeback in Baltimore and a gritty 21-19 win over Buffalo. Then the wheels fell off during a three-game losing skid when Tagovailoa suffered a scary concussion. A five-game win streak followed, lifting them to 8-3 before a brutal December collapse exposed their depth. The Dolphins dropped five straight games, including a miserable California road trip. Needing a miracle, they squeaked out an ugly, touchdown-less 11-6 win over the New York Jets in Week 18 to save their season.
With Tagovailoa sidelined by another concussion, rookie Skylar Thompson started the wild-card game in Buffalo. Despite being massive underdogs, Miami fought valiantly before falling 34-31. The legacy of the 2022 squad is one of untapped potential and tactical revolution. Hill earned first-team All-Pro honors, and the team established a blueprint that altered modern passing offenses. It left fans wondering what could have been if their quarterback stayed healthy.
