Season Review
Miami Dolphins 2014
The 2014 Miami Dolphins entered the season with an intense urge to break out of a cycle of aggressively average football. Head coach Joe Philbin returned for a pivotal third year with brand new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, tasking him with modernizing a sluggish franchise. Miami made heavy investments in free agency to fortify the roster, adding marquee offensive tackle Branden Albert, defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, and physical defensive backs Louis Delmas and Cortland Finnegan. The changes ignited optimism for a fanbase starving for a postseason appearance, but the final outcome was painfully familiar. The Dolphins flashed tantalizing upside but completely ran out of gas in December, finishing with an 8-8 record and a third-place finish in the AFC East to extend their agonizing playoff drought.
Under Lazor's new up-tempo scheme, third-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill took a notable step forward as a franchise cornerstone. Tannehill was highly efficient, completing 66.4% of his passes for 4,045 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while also adding 311 yards on the ground. Running back Lamar Miller enjoyed a breakout campaign, rushing for 1,099 yards and 8 touchdowns while averaging a superb 5.1 yards per carry. Through the air, high-priced receiver Mike Wallace served as the primary vertical threat with 862 yards and 10 scores, while reliable tight end Charles Clay chipped in 605 yards. The undisputed revelation of the passing game, however, was rookie wideout Jarvis Landry, who caught 84 passes for 758 yards. Led by this nucleus, the Dolphins offense climbed to a respectable 11th in the NFL in points scored (24.3 ppg) and 14th in total yards.
On the other side of the ball, the Dolphins defense operated at two completely different speeds throughout the season, ultimately finishing 20th in points allowed (23.3 ppg) and 12th in total yards. The undisputed strength of the unit was a terrifying edge rush anchored by Cameron Wake, who wreaked absolute havoc with 11.5 sacks, 22 QB hits and 3 forced fumbles. Defensive end Olivier Vernon added complementary pressure with 6.5 sacks, while linebacker Jelani Jenkins stepped up to record a team-high 110 tackles. In the secondary, veteran cornerback Brent Grimes was a certified lockdown weapon, recording 5 interceptions, including an iconic, leaping one-handed pick against Megatron in Detroit. Despite these high-end individual efforts, the defense was repeatedly gashed on the ground, ranking a dismal 24th in rushing yards allowed and failing to secure crucial late-game stops.
This campaign was defined by wild momentum swings and frustrating late-game collapses. The year started with a glorious peak in Week 1, as Miami rode a dominant second half to crush Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 33-20. Following an early-season stumble, the Dolphins caught fire in mid-autumn, dismantling the San Diego Chargers 37-0 in Week 9 to peak at 5-3. The integrity of the season began to fracture a week later in Detroit, when the defense allowed a heartbreaking, game-winning touchdown in the final minute. A thrilling, high-scoring 39-36 road loss to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in Week 12 further exposed defensive cracks, setting the stage for a late-season slide where the team lost three of their final four games.
Needing a strong December finish to save their playoff lives, the Dolphins folded under pressure when the stakes escalated. Back-to-back losses to Baltimore and New England officially eliminated them from contention, capped off by an embarrassing 37-24 home loss to a mediocre New York Jets squad in Week 17 that sealed their 8-8 fate. The collapse meant Miami became an emblem of mid-tier NFL purgatory, wasting premium seasons from their star talent. While the team took home no major individual hardware, both Wake and Grimes earned Pro Bowl selections for their efforts. Ultimately, the 2014 Dolphins left a legacy of missed opportunities, remembered as a deeply talented collection of players that simply lacked the finishing instinct to survive the grueling AFC landscape.
