Season Review
Miami Dolphins 2020
The 2020 Miami Dolphins season was a lesson in accelerated rebuilding that ultimately culminated in heartbreak. Entering year two under head coach Brian Flores, expectations were modest following a 5-11 campaign. Yet, general manager Chris Grier aggressively remade the roster, signing free agents Byron Jones and Kyle Van Noy while drafting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa fifth overall. The Dolphins shattered forecasts with a five-win turnaround to finish 10-6, claiming second place in the AFC East. However, an elite conference field made Miami the only 10-win team in 2020 to miss the postseason.
Offensively, Chan Gailey’s unit walked an unprecedented quarterback tightrope. Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick started seven games, throwing for 2,091 yards and 13 touchdowns with his signature flair. In Week 8, Flores handed the reins to the rookie Tagovailoa, who went 6-3 as a starter while throwing for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. Supported by another rookie, lineman Robert Hunt, the offense ranked 15th in scoring with 404 points (25.3 ppg). While the ground game sputtered with Myles Gaskin gaining 584 yards, receiver DeVante Parker and tight end Mike Gesicki combined for 1,496 yards, keeping the ball-control scheme afloat.
The true heartbeat of this squad was Josh Boyer’s defense, which surrendered just 21.1 points per game to rank sixth in the league. The philosophy relied on heavy pressure and elite coverage. Edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah excelled with a team-high nine sacks, while Van Noy added six. The real magic happened in the secondary, where high-priced corner Byron Jones complemented a spectacular group including Xavien Howard and safety Eric Rowe who chipped in 91 tackles. Miami weaponized this aggressive group to lead the NFL with 29 forced takeaways, often turning defensive series into instant game changing momentum swings.
Miami’s campaign featured wild streaks and unforgettable sequences. After an ugly 1-3 start, the Dolphins ignited a blistering five-game winning streak, including a 43-17 demolition of San Francisco. The absolute peak of the chaos arrived in Week 16 against the Las Vegas Raiders. With playoff hopes on the line, Fitzpatrick entered in relief and executed an impossible, no-look facemask completion to Mack Hollins, setting up Jason Sanders' game-winning field goal. It was a signature, high-wire act for a team that constantly defied gravity.
The dream died in a brutal 56-26 Week 17 loss to the Buffalo Bills, leaving Miami outside the playoff bubble on tiebreakers. Despite the finale, the legacy of the 2020 Dolphins remains notable. Cornerback Xavien Howard had a legendary year, leading the NFL with 10 interceptions and 20 passes defended to earn first-team All-Pro honors and finish third for Defensive Player of the Year. Kicker Jason Sanders also secured a first-team All-Pro nod by drilling 36 of 39 field goals
