Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 2025
Following a 14-win campaign in 2024, head coach Kevin O'Connell's Minnesota Vikings entered 2025 seeking stability under young quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Offseason retooling brought veteran trench depth in interior linemen Ryan Kelly and Will Fries, alongside defensive additions Isaiah Rodgers, Jonathan Allen, and Javon Hargrave. However, persistent offensive turbulence and quarterback injuries derailed expectations, dragging Minnesota to a 4-8 start. Though a fiery five-game win streak closed out the year, the Vikings finished 9-8 and third in the competitive NFC North, narrowly missing out on the postseason.
Offensively, Minnesota stumbled to 26th in scoring woth 344 points (20.2 ppg) and 28th in total yards (4,675), doomed by a league-high 30 turnovers. McCarthy flashed potential across 10 starts, throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while adding four rushing scores. When McCarthy was sidelined, veteran Carson Wentz started five games, passing for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns against 5 interceptions. Superstar receiver Justin Jefferson commanded double teams but still posted 84 catches for 1,048 yards. On the ground, newcomer Jordan Mason paced the backfield with 758 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while Aaron Jones contributed 548 rushing yards.
While the offense sputtered, defensive coordinator Brian Flores engineered an elite unit that carried the team, ranking seventh in points allowed surrendering 333 points (19.6 ppg) and third in total yards allowed (4,804). Minnesota fielded a premier pass defense, finishing second in passing yards allowed - 2,694 - and second in passing touchdowns surrendered allowing only 15. Inside linebacker Blake Cashman anchored the defense with a team-leading 144 tackles. Linebacker Eric Wilson racked up 115 tackles and 6.5 sacks, while second-year edge rusher Dallas Turner led the pass rush with 8.0 sacks. 30 year old outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel added 7.0 sacks and an interception.
The season played out as a dramatic two-act play. After a wild 48-10 blowout win over Cincinnati in Week 3 and an impressive 27-24 win against the Lions in week 9, the Vikings collapsed into a crippling four-game losing streak from Weeks 10 through 13. The rock -bottom came in a 26-0 shutout loss at Seattle, leaving Minnesota stranded at 4-8. Facing a lost year, O'Connell's squad flipped the narrative with a dominant 31-0 rebound over Washington, kicking off an impressive five-game winning streak to end the season. Late-season division victories over Detroit (23-10) and Green Bay (16-3) salvaged a winning record.
Despite the late flourish, Minnesota missed the playoffs, yet the 2025 campaign highlighted individual brilliance. Kicker Will Reichard delivered a spectacular First-Team All-Pro season, converting 33 of 35 field goals with a long of 62 yards. Long snapper Andrew DePaola added Second-Team All-Pro honors. Surprisingly, the Vikings became the rare winning team to yield zero Pro Bowl selections. The 2025 season served as a gritty transitional bridge, demonstrating defensive dominance under Flores while establishing the groundwork for McCarthy's growth.
