Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 1998
Entering the 1998 season, head coach Dennis Green had already turned Minnesota into a perennial playoff contender, but nobody foresaw the offensive explosion on the horizon. The franchise altered its trajectory in the 1998 draft by taking wide receiver Randy Moss, pairing him with established star Cris Carter. What followed was an absolute juggernaut campaign. The Vikings ran away with the NFC Central division, compiling an astonishing 15-1 regular-season record. It was a year where Minnesota felt utterly invincible, steamrolling opponents with an unstoppable aerial attack and capping off the most dominant regular season in franchise history.
After starting quarterback Brad Johnson went down early, 35-year-old Randall Cunningham stepped in and authored one of the great career resurrections in league history. Cunningham threw for 3,704 yards, 34 touchdowns, and a blistering 106.0 passer rating. His primary catalyst was Moss, who put together an unbelievable rookie year with 69 catches, 1,313 receiving yards, and a league-leading 17 touchdown receptions to capture Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Carter provided the ideal complement with 78 receptions, 1011 yards and 12 touchdowns, while running back Robert Smith anchored the ground game with 1,187 rushing yards. Supported by kicker Gary Anderson, who went a perfect 35-for-35 on field goal attempts in the regular season, Minnesota ranked 1st in total scoring with 556 points (34.8 ppg) and 2nd in total offensive yards (6,264).
While the offense grabbed national headlines, Minnesota’s defense quietly turned in a solid, championship-caliber performance. The unit ranked 6th in points allowed, giving up just 296 points over 16 games (18.5 ppg). Up front, first-team All-Pro defensive end John Randle anchored the pass rush with 10.5 sacks, continuously collapsing the pocket and generating disruption. Middle linebacker Ed McDaniel spearheaded the front seven with 128 total tackles, while secondary standouts Jimmy Hitchcock and Robert Griffith capitalized on opposing quarterbacks forced to throw aggressively to keep pace with Minnesota’s scoring. Hitchcock led the team with 7 interceptions, returning 3 for touchdowns, while Griffith added 5 interceptions.
Minnesota’s regular season was defined by relentless dominance and key statement wins. The iconic turning point came in Week 5 on Monday Night Football, where the Vikings dismantled the rival Green Bay Packers 37-24 at Lambeau Field behind 442 passing yards. They followed that with a Thanksgiving Day masterpiece in Week 13, blowing out the Dallas Cowboys 46-36 as Moss hauled in three long touchdown passes on just three catches. Outside of a narrow 27-24 setback against Tampa Bay in Week 9, the Vikings were flawless, closing out the regular season on an eight-game winning streak and dropping 50 points on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16.
After crushing the Arizona Cardinals 41-21 in the Divisional Round, the Vikings met the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game. In one of the most heartbreaking twists in football history, Anderson missed his first field goal of the entire season late in the fourth quarter, opening the door for Atlanta to force overtime and steal a 30-27 victory. Despite missing out on Super Bowl XXXIII, the 1998 Vikings remain an indelible offensive benchmark. Cunningham, Moss, Randle, Anderson and guard Randall McDaniel all earned First-Team All-Pro honors while the squad had 10 Pro Bowl nods. While the heartbreak endures, the team set a high-water mark for modern offensive firepower.
