Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 2002
Entering 2002 under new head coach Mike Tice, the Minnesota Vikings faced a brand-new era as the NFL shifted to a 32-team alignment, dropping the franchise into the newly minted NFC North. Fresh off a chaotic 2001 campaign, the Vikings fortified their roster via the draft with top-ten offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie and defensive back Brian Williams, while adding free agents safety Corey Chavous, quarterback Gus Frerotte, and defensive lineman Billy Lyon. Expectations were guardedly optimistic, but an excruciating 0-4 start - highlighted by an overtime heartbreaker against Buffalo - doomed Minnesota from the jump. Tice’s squad battled back to finish 6-10, taking second place in the division, but missed the postseason for a second consecutive year.
Despite the losing record, Minnesota fielded a explosive, dynamic offense that ranked second in total yards with 6,192 and eighth in scoring at 390 points (24.4 ppg). Quarterback Daunte Culpepper orchestrated a dual-threat assault, throwing for 3,853 yards and 18 touchdowns while adding 609 yards and 10 scores on the ground. However, his 23 interceptions hindered consistent execution. Following Cris Carter’s offseason departure, Randy Moss dominated opposing secondary units, catching 106 passes for 1,347 yards and seven touchdowns. Breakout running back Michael Bennett spearheaded the NFL’s top-ranked rushing attack, gashing defenses for 1,296 yards on a 5.1 yards-per-carry average, while short-yardage specialist Moe Williams added 11 rushing touchdowns.
Where the offense dazzled, the defense dragged Minnesota down into the division cellar. The unit surrendered 442 points (27.6 ppg) to rank 30th in the NFL, while allowing 5,769 total yards to rank 26th. Defensive tackles Chris Hovan and Fred Robbins tried to hold down the interior, with Hovan earning Second-team All-Pro honors after generating 5.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss. Defensive end Lance Johnstone led the pass rush with 7.0 sacks, while middle linebacker Greg Biekert anchored the tackling effort with 101 combined stops and four interceptions. New addition Corey Chavous provided a spark in the secondary, recording 83 tackles and three interceptions, including a 43-yard pick-six.
After the disastrous 0-4 start before the bye week, the Vikings found momentum in divisional play by stopping a two-game skid with a 31-21 victory over Green Bay in Week 11. The absolute highlight arrived in Week 15 at New Orleans, when Culpepper scored a dramatic late touchdown pass to Moss and completed a gutsy two-point conversion run to steal a 32-31 victory. That thriller sparked a season-ending three-game winning streak, capped by a wild 38-36 victory over Detroit in Week 17.
While missing the playoffs marked another lost season on paper, the 2002 Vikings established a blueprint for immense offensive production. Pro Bowl honors for Bennett and Moss validated the roster's elite skill-position talent. Tice’s team showed genuine resolve by winning three straight games to finish the year, setting the stage for an explosive offensive renaissance in the mid-2000s.
