Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 2004
Head coach Mike Tice entered the 2004 campaign under intense scrutiny following the previous year’s painful late-season slide, aiming to finally push Minnesota back into the postseason. The organization made a splash in free agency by acquiring Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield to solidify a porous defensive secondary. Minnesota sprinted out to a promising 5-1 start, but a familiar midseason slump triggered an eventual 3-7 stretch to close out the year. Finishing second in the newly formed NFC North with an 8-8 record, the Vikings barely squeaked into the playoffs as a wildcard entrant. Despite the mediocre record, Minnesota remained one of the NFL’s most explosive and volatile teams.
Offensively, Minnesota was an elite unit finishing fourth in total offense with 6,339 yards and sixth in scoring with 405 points (25.3 ppg). Quarterback Daunte Culpepper produced a legendary individual season, leading the NFL with 4,717 passing yards while setting a franchise record with 39 touchdown passes against just 11 interceptions. When superstar wideout Randy Moss missed time due to a hamstring injury - still managing 13 touchdown catches in 13 games - Nate Burleson stepped up brilliantly, recording 68 catches for 1,006 yards and nine touchdowns. Tight end Jermaine Wiggins served as a reliable safety valve with 71 receptions, while rookie running back Mewelde Moore provided key depth alongside Onterrio Smith in a committee backfield.
While the offense consistently generated highlights, the defense proved to be the team’s major Achilles’ heel again, ranking 26th in points allowed with 395 (24.7 ppg) and 28th in total yards allowed with 5,902. Defensive tackle Kevin Williams was a dominant bright spot along the front four, racking up 11.5 sacks and earning First-team All-Pro honors. Edge rusher Lance Johnstone added 11.0 sacks as a situational pass rusher, while middle linebacker E.J. Henderson paced the linebacking core with 94 tackles. New arrival Antoine Winfield brought much-needed physicality to the secondary, tallying 88 tackles and three interceptions, but the unit surrendered 30 passing touchdowns.
The season was defined by dramatic shootouts and close divisional rivalry games. Highlights included a wild 38-31 win at New Orleans in Week 6 where the offense racked up 605 total yards. However, back-to-back late-season division losses to Chicago and Green Bay threatened to destroy their playoff hopes. The Christmas Eve battle against the Packers at the Metrodome saw Culpepper pass for 285 yards and three touchdowns, but Green Bay kicked a late walk-off field goal to seal a 34-31 victory and secure the division title. A Week 17 loss to Washington left Minnesota backing into the postseason at .500.
In the Wild Card Round, Minnesota surprised everyone by traveling to Lambeau Field and shocking the rival Packers 31-17, becoming one of the few 8-8 teams to win a playoff game. The postseason run ended the following week with a 27-14 loss to the eventual NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles. Culpepper’s spectacular season earned him Pro Bowl honors alongside center Matt Birk, while Kevin Williams cemented his place among the league’s premier defenders. The season marked the end of an iconic era in Minnesota history, as Randy Moss was traded to Oakland in the subsequent offseason.
