Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 2000
Entering the 2000 NFL campaign, head coach Dennis Green made a massive structural wager by handing the reins to first-year starting quarterback Daunte Culpepper while re-tooling the defense with rookie draft selections Chris Hovan, Fred Robbins, and Tyrone Carter. The gamble paid immediate dividends. Minnesota charged out of the gate with an overwhelming offensive assault, capturing the NFC Central title with an 11-5 record. Despite hitting a late-season speed bump where Culpepper battled injuries during a three-game closing slump, Minnesota positioned itself as a primary NFC powerhouse before reaching the NFC Championship game.
Offensively, Minnesota was an unstoppable machine, finishing 5th in scoring with 397 points (24.8 ppg) and 5th in total offense with 5,961 yards. In his breakout Pro Bowl season, Culpepper threw for 3,937 yards and a league-leading 33 touchdowns while adding 470 rushing yards and 7 scores on the ground. Running back Robert Smith anchored a potent ground attack, racking up 1,521 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns to lead an offense that averaged 5.0 yards per carry. Out wide, Randy Moss remained lethal with 77 receptions for 1,437 yards and 15 touchdowns, paired perfectly with Cris Carter, who added 96 receptions for 1,274 yards and 9 scores.
While the offense produced highlight-reel plays, the defense struggled to maintain consistency, finishing 24th in points allowed with 371 (23.2 ppg) and 28th in total yards allowed with 5,701. The unit surrendered 3,913 passing yards, ranking 28th in the league, and relied heavily on dynamic plays from its linebackers and pass rush. Middle linebacker Kailee Wong anchored the defense with 112 tackles, while Ed McDaniel added 119 combined tackles. Veteran defensive end John Randle led the pass rush with 8.0 sacks, supported by Talance Sawyer with 6.0 sacks and rookie Hovan, who chipped in 2.0 sacks and 13 tackles for loss.
The season featured absolute dominant stretches followed by unsettling stumbles. Minnesota opened the year on a scorching 7-0 run, highlighted by high-octane victories over the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions. After an 11-2 start, the turning point arrived late in the year when injuries hit Culpepper, leading to a dramatic three-game losing streak to St. Louis, Green Bay, and Indianapolis to close out the regular season. However, the early-season dominance provided enough cushion to secure the division crown.
In the playoffs, Minnesota asserted its home-field advantage with a decisive 34-16 victory over the New Orleans Saints in the Divisional Round. However, the campaign ended in agonizing fashion with a shocking 41-0 defeat to the New York Giants on the back of 5 costly turnovers in the NFC Championship Game. Individual postseason accolades still recognized the roster's elite core, with Moss earning First-team All-Pro honors, Smith taking Second-team All-Pro, and seven total Vikings - including Culpepper, Moss, Carter, Smith, center Matt Birk, guard Korey Stringer, and safety Robert Griffith - earning Pro Bowl selections.
