Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 2011
Entering 2011 with Leslie Frazier taking over as full-time head coach, the Minnesota Vikings faced an uncertain rebuilding period following Brett Favre’s retirement. To bridge the gap, Minnesota acquired veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb via trade and drafted Florida State passing prospect Christian Ponder in the first round, alongside promising tight end Kyle Rudolph. What followed was a total derailment. The Vikings crumbled to a 3-13 record, finishing 4th in the NFC North and matching the worst 16-game season tally in franchise history. An agonizing 2-9 mark in one-possession games extinguished any faint hopes of staying competitive, leading to an early elimination from the playoffs.
Offensively, Minnesota finished 19th in scoring with 340 points (21.3 ppg) and 18th in total offense, hindered by severe instability at behind center. McNabb started six games, managing 1,026 passing yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions before being benched and eventually released. Ponder took over in Week 7, producing 1,853 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions across 10 starts. The offense relied on running back Adrian Peterson, who rushed for 970 yards and 12 touchdowns in 12 games before a late-season ACL injury. Toby Gerhart register 531 ground yards in relief of Peterson. Wide receiver Percy Harvin served as the primary receiving target, leading the team with 87 receptions for 967 yards while adding eight total touchdowns including two on the ground.
Defensively, the Vikings endured a brutal collapse ranking 31st in points allowed by surrendering 449 points (28.1 ppg) and finishing 21st in total yards. The secondary was continuously exploited, giving up 34 passing touchdowns while recording a franchise-low eight interceptions. Yet, defensive end Jared Allen produced a singular, spectacular pass-rushing masterpiece. Allen terrorized opposing tackles all season, recording 22.0 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, 32 QB hits and four forced fumbles. Linebacker Chad Greenway provided defensive stability at the second level, leading the team with 154 combined tackles, while Brian Robison added 8.0 sacks opposite Allen.
The 2011 campaign was defined by second-half blown leads and agonizing heartbreak. Minnesota squandered double-digit leads in three consecutive weeks to open the year, including a 17-0 lead against Tampa Bay and a 20-0 lead against Detroit. After starting 0-4, the team briefly halted its skid with a 34-10 victory over Arizona in Week 5. However, a six-game losing streak following the bye week completely buried the season. A Week 16 road win over Washington provided a rare late highlight, but it came at a massive cost when Peterson suffered his severe knee injury.
The campaign holds historical significance due to Jared Allen’s individual dominance. Allen missed Michael Strahan’s NFL single-season sack record by just half a sack, earning First-Team All-Pro honors, a Pro Bowl nod, and runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year. While the 3-13 record was painful, the trial-by-fire development for Ponder and Rudolph helped lay the baseline roster structure for Minnesota's unexpected playoff rebound the following season.
