Season Review

Minnesota Vikings 2024

Nobody saw the 2024 Minnesota Vikings coming. After Kirk Cousins bolted for Atlanta and rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy suffered a season-ending knee injury in August, oddsmakers pegged Minnesota for a rebuilding gap year. Instead, head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah orchestrated a staggering 14-3 campaign - the franchise's most regular-season victories since 1998. Driven by shrewd free-agent acquisitions in quarterback Sam Darnold, running back Aaron Jones, and pass rusher Jonathan Greenard, alongside first-round edge rusher Dallas Turner, Minnesota transformed a transitional roster into a legitimate juggernaut. Although playing in the strong NFC North relegated their 14 wins to a second-place finish and a Wild Card berth, O'Connell's squad redefined low-expectation turnarounds.

Offensively, O'Connell unlocked the potential of Sam Darnold, who delivered a career-revitalizing season. Darnold threw for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, directing an attack that ranked ninth in scoring with 432 points (25.4 ppg) and 12th in total yards with 5,898. Superstar wideout Justin Jefferson earned First-Team All-Pro honors by hauling in 103 receptions for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns, while sophomore target Jordan Addison added 875 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns. The addition of Aaron Jones revived a previously dormant ground game, as the veteran back accumulated 1,138 rushing yards and five scores while adding 408 receiving yards. Combined with tight end T.J. Hockenson's midseason return, Minnesota operated a balanced, high-octane passing offense.

Defensively, coordinator Brian Flores unleashed a chaotic, pressure-packed blitz scheme that transformed Minnesota into one of the league's elite units, finishing fifth in points allowed at 332 (19.5 ppg) and leading the NFL with 33 takeaways. Offseason splash Jonathan Greenard spearheaded the edge rush with a team-high 12.0 sacks, while Andrew Van Ginkel generated 11.5 sacks and returned two interceptions for touchdowns. Inside linebacker Blake Cashman anchored the box with a team-leading 112 tackles, while cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. picked off a career-best six passes in the secondary. Backed by the deep safety tandem of Camryn Bynum and veteran Harrison Smith, Flores' hyper-aggressive defense allowed just 1,588 rushing yards all season, ranking second in the league against the run.

The story of the season was built on two absurd winning streaks. Minnesota opened the year with a blistering 5-0 run, highlighted by convincing victories over the Giants, Houston, and a dramatic Week 4 triumph at Green Bay. After a brief two-game hiccup after the bye in October, the Vikings reeled off nine consecutive wins from Week 9 through Week 17, sweeping the Packers and sweeping Chicago with a gritty 30-27 overtime win at Soldier Field in week 12. They topped Atlanta 42-21 in Week 14 and outlasted Seattle in Week 16 to secure their 13th victory before taking down Green Bay 27-25 in Week 17. By the time they reached 14-2, Minnesota had established itself as the league's ultimate surprise contender.

However, the magical run encountered a brutal wall in January. A Week 18 loss at 15-2 Detroit locked Minnesota into the top Wild Card spot, forcing a road trip to SoFi Stadium where the Los Angeles Rams halted their dream season in a 27-9 playoff defeat. Despite the early postseason exit, Minnesota made history as the first 14-win Wild Card team in NFL history. O'Connell earned Coach of the Year honors, Darnold earned a Pro Bowl selection, and Jefferson solidified his status as the game's premier wide receiver. The 2024 campaign will forever stand as an unforgettable masterclass in coaching and organizational adaptability.
