Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 2007
Entering Brad Childress's second year at the helm, the 2007 Minnesota Vikings sought identity in a transitioning NFC North. Fresh off a 6-10 campaign, Minnesota bolstered its roster via free agency by acquiring tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and wide receiver Bobby Wade, while drafting wideout Sidney Rice and defensive end Brian Robison. However, the defining franchise move arrived in April's draft with seventh overall pick Adrian Peterson. Expectations were modest for a retooling offense led by second-year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, yet Minnesota unexpectedly found itself in the thick of the postseason hunt. A gut-wrenching late-season wobble ultimately left the Vikings at 8-8, finishing second in the division and watching the playoffs from home.
The offense revolved entirely around a dominant ground attack, ranking 1st in the NFL in rushing yards with 2,634 and rushing touchdowns with 22 despite ranking dead last with only 432 passing attempts. Rookie phenom Adrian Peterson exploded onto the national stage with 1,341 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 games, averaging a staggering 5.6 yards per carry. Chester Taylor added 844 rushing yards as an elite secondary option. Passing was a persistent struggle, as Tarvaris Jackson threw for 1,911 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions across 12 starts. Bobby Wade led all receivers with 54 catches for 647 yards but this offense lived and died strictly on the ground.
Defensively, Minnesota presented an extreme Jekyll-and-Hyde profile. The Williams Wall - defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams - anchored a stout front seven that ranked 1st in the league against the run, permitting a meager 1,185 yards. Middle linebacker E.J. Henderson racked up 119 tackles, while Chad Greenway posted 105 stops in his debut campaign. However, the secondary was routinely torched for 4,225 passing yards, ranking last in the league. Safety Darren Sharper tallied four interceptions, but aerial vulnerability hampered a scoring defense that otherwise finished a respectable 12th by conceding 19.4 ppg.
The season's defining moment occurred in Week 9 against San Diego, where Peterson set the NFL single-game rushing record with 296 yards in a 35-17 triumph. That performance gave the team the impetus to initiate a five-game winning streak from mid-November through mid-December, vaulting Minnesota from 3-6 to an 8-6 playoff position. Highlights included a 41-17 dismantling of the New York Giants featuring three defensive interception returns for touchdowns. However, the momentum evaporated down the stretch with a Week 16 loss to Washington and a heartbreaking overtime defeat in Denver to close the year.
Missing the postseason at 8-8 felt like a wasted opportunity given the midseason surge but the 2007 campaign established a blueprint for Minnesota's future. Peterson took home AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, while offensive linemen Steve Hutchinson and Matt Birk earned Pro Bowl nods alongside defenders Kevin Williams, Pat Williams and Darren Sharper. Though quarterback instability capped their ceiling, the 2007 Vikings introduced the league to a generational running back and forged an elite run-stopping defense that would define the era.
