Season Review
Minnesota Vikings 1999
Fresh off an astonishing 15-1 campaign in 1998, head coach Dennis Green and the 1999 Minnesota Vikings entered the season burdened by immense Super Bowl expectations. To bolster the roster, Minnesota targeted future franchise quarterback Daunte Culpepper and cornerback Kenny Wright in the draft while signing volatile passer Jeff George in free agency. However, now having a target on their back and also losing key role players to the Cleveland Browns expansion draft made repeating their past dominance a tall order. Minnesota scrapped their way to a 10-6 regular-season record, securing second place in the fiercely contested NFC Central division. The year culminated in a Wild Card victory over Dallas before a high-scoring Divisional Round exit against St. Louis.
The Vikings offense remained an explosive aerial circus, ranking 3rd in total yards with 5,793 and 5th in scoring with 399 points (24.9 ppg). After veteran Randall Cunningham stumbled to a 2-4 start, Jeff George took the reins and revived the unit, throwing for 2,816 yards, 23 touchdowns, and a 94.2 passer rating across ten starts. George leaned heavily on Minnesota’s lethal receiving duo: Cris Carter caught 90 passes for 1,241 yards and 13 touchdowns, while sophomore sensation Randy Moss added 80 receptions for 1,413 yards and 11 scores. Tailback Robert Smith anchored the ground attack with 1,015 rushing yards, while power back Leroy Hoard chipped in 10 rushing touchdowns.
Defensively, Minnesota lagged behind its offensive colleagues, ranking 18th in points allowed by conceding 335 (20.9) and 27th in total yards allowed (5,597). The secondary was regularly exploited, surrendering 3,980 passing yards. However, the front seven possessed a fierce pass rush that generated 46 total sacks. Hall of Fame defensive end John Randle posted 10.0 sacks, complemented by Duane Clemons with 9.0 sacks and returning 38 year old veteran Chris Doleman with 8.0 sacks. In the middle of the field, safety Robert Griffith racked up a team-leading 130 combined tackles, while linebacker Ed McDaniel recorded 121 tackles.
The season hinged on a pivotal midseason decision following a sluggish 2-4 start. Following a frustrating Week 6 loss to Detroit, Green benched Cunningham and inserted George as the starter. The move paid immediate dividends, igniting a five-game winning streak that included a 40-16 rout of San Francisco and a thrilling overtime victory against Chicago. Minnesota won eight of their final ten contests, securing crucial division victories against Green Bay and Detroit down the stretch to lock up an NFC playoff bid.
In the postseason, Minnesota opened with a convincing 27-10 Wild Card win over the Dallas Cowboys. Their run ended the following week in a memorable 49-37 Divisional Round shootout against Kurt Warner and the Super Bowl-bound 'Greatest Show on Turf' St. Louis Rams. Individual honors still highlighted the roster’s top talent, as Cris Carter earned First-team All-Pro accolades, while Robert Griffith and punter Mitch Berger were named Second-team All-Pros. Carter, Moss, Berger, center Jeff Christy, and guard Randall McDaniel all received Pro Bowl selections, solidifying the 1999 squad as one of the era’s most entertaining offensive powerhouses.
