Season Review

Minnesota Vikings 2023

Coming off a 13-win division title in head coach Kevin O'Connell's 2022 debut, the 2023 Minnesota Vikings entered the campaign attempting to prove their fortune was no fluke. Offseason moves brought defensive coordinator Brian Flores alongside free agent additions Byron Murphy Jr., Marcus Davenport, and Dean Lowry to reshape a shaky defense. However, crippling fumbles and turnovers doomed Minnesota to a dismal 0-3 start. The team fought back with five straight victories starting in mid October, but disaster struck in Week 8 when starting quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending Achilles tear. Despite a frantic rotation of four starting quarterbacks, the Vikings faltered down the stretch, dropping six of their final seven games to finish 7-10 and third in the NFC North, missing the postseason.

When functioning smoothly, Minnesota boasted a high-volume aerial attack that ranked fifth in passing yards with 4,359 and fourth in passing touchdowns with 30, though a brutal 34 turnovers dragged the overall scoring rank down to 22nd as they only scored 344 points (20.2 ppg) on the year. Before his injury, Cousins was playing at an elite level, throwing for 2,331 yards and 18 touchdowns against five interceptions in eight games. When superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson missed seven games with a hamstring issue, first-round draft pick Jordan Addison filled the void brilliantly, catching 70 passes for 911 yards and a team-leading 10 touchdowns. Tight end T.J. Hockenson remained a reliable safety valve with 95 receptions for 960 yards. However, an ineffective rushing game that ranked 29th with only 1,553 yards forced an unstable rotation of Joshua Dobbs, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall into obvious passing situations.

Under Flores' blitz-happy, hyper-aggressive scheme, the defense engineered an impressive midseason turnaround, finishing 13th in points allowed by surrendering 362 (21.3 ppg) and 8th against the run giving up a measly 3.8 yards per rush. Outside linebacker Danielle Hunter delivered a dominant Pro Bowl campaign, racking up 16.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss. Safety Camryn Bynum led the team with 137 tackles, while defensive playmaker Josh Metellus generated four forced fumbles and 116 tackles. Undrafted rookie linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. provided an explosive physical presence, recording 102 tackles. Even as injuries diluted the secondary, Flores leveraged constant pressure and unique pre-snap looks from veteran safety Harrison Smith to keep Minnesota competitive in nearly every game.

The season was defined by dramatic swings. A stellar Week 7 primetime win over San Francisco showcased Cousins' brilliance, followed closely by the improbable 'Passtronaut' moment in Week 9 when newly acquired Joshua Dobbs led a comeback win in Atlanta without knowing the full playbook. Weeks later, Minnesota prevailed 3-0 against Las Vegas in the lowest-scoring NFL game in 16 years. Yet a late-season four-game losing streak crushed all playoff hopes. The 2023 campaign closed a defining chapter in franchise history, marking the end of the Cousins era and setting the stage for an immediate organizational reset.
