Season Review
Seattle Seahawks 2025
If you told a Seattle sports fan in March 2025 that general manager John Schneider’s grand plan involved dumping Tyler Lockett, trading away DK Metcalf and Geno Smith, and handing the keys of the franchise to Sam Darnold, they would have politely asked him to move away from the Pacific Northwest. Yet, Mike Macdonald’s second year at the helm of the Seahawks was a fine example of roster reinvention that resulted in a franchise-best 14-3 record and a sweet NFC West crown. After kicking off the season with a quiet 13-17 division loss to the 49ers, Seattle absolutely caught fire, winning 11 of their final 12 regular season games to lock up the NFC number one seed for the first time since 2014. The culmination? A relentless postseason march that ended with Macdonald holding the Lombardi Trophy aloft after a decisive 29-13 demolition of the Patriots in Super Bowl LX.
Offensively, coordinator Klint Kubiak engineered a potent, highly efficient run-first offense that finished third in the league in scoring with 483 points (28.4 ppg) and eighth in total yards. The entire operation centered around the career resurrection of Sam Darnold, who threw for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns, and earned a Pro Bowl nod with a stellar 99.1 passer rating. Darnold’s absolute go-to weapon was Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who took home Offensive Player of the Year honors while shattering franchise records with 119 receptions for 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns. Cooper Kupp arrived as a seasoned veteran target to pull down 47 passes, while the backfield operated as a brutal two-headed monster. Kenneth Walker III ground out 1,027 rushing yards, while Zach Charbonnet proved to be a lethal short-yardage weapon with 12 touchdowns on the ground.
While the offense hummed, the true identity of the 2025 Seahawks belonged to ‘The Dark Side’ - a dominant defense that ranked first in points allowed by yielding just 17.2 points per game. Mike Macdonald’s 3-4 scheme completely stifled opposing offenses with a relentless, multiple-front pass rush and a lock-down secondary. Pro Bowl tackle Leonard Williams set the tone up front with seven sacks, while offseason acquisition DeMarcus Lawrence brought veteran snarl with six sacks and three forced fumbles. Second-year cornerback Devon Witherspoon and deep safety Coby Bryant, who led the secondary with four interceptions, blanketed wide receivers, while linebacker Ernest Jones flew sideline-to-sideline to log a team-high five picks and 126 tackles.
The regular season schedule featured a series of dramatic, high-stakes statement games that proved Seattle belonged in the championship conversation. After a rocky October 5 shootout loss to Tampa Bay, the Seahawks went on a tear, highlighted by a crushing 26-0 shutout of the Vikings in Week 13 and a thrilling 38-37 overtime victory over the rival Rams in Week 16. However, the ultimate tone-setter came in Week 18 against their chief divisional nemesis. Needing a victory to secure a franchise-record fourteenth regular-season win, the Seahawks traveled to San Francisco and delivered a suffocating 13-3 defensive masterpiece that established who owned the NFC West.
Unlike previous playoff runs that took years off the lives of Pacific Northwest fans, the 2025 postseason was a coronation. The Seahawks became the first Super Bowl champion to navigate a postseason without committing a single turnover. They dismantled the 49ers 41-6 in the Divisional Round, outlasted the Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship, and rode Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III’s 135 rushing yards to a comfortable 29-13 win in Santa Clara. Historically, this team secured elite status. With five All-Pro selections, six Pro Bowlers, and an OPOY award in JSN, this group did not just win a championship - they built a new blueprint.
