Season Review
Seattle Seahawks 2016
Pete Carroll’s Seattle Seahawks entered the 2016 season with the familiar weight of championship expectations, but also a looming sense of transition. The offseason marked the retirement of franchise icon Marshawn Lynch, forcing Seattle to search for a new identity beyond their storied ‘Beast Mode’ ground game. General manager John Schneider attempted to patch a leaking offensive line by drafting Germain Ifedi in the first round and signing veteran tackle J'Marcus Webb. Despite a rotating door in the backfield and a series of nagging injuries to their quarterback, the Seahawks gritted their way to a 10-5-1 record. This was enough to reclaim the NFC West crown and secure their fifth consecutive trip to the postseason.
Without a consistent running game, Seattle leaned heavily into the arm of Russell Wilson, who shouldered the load of a transitioning West Coast offense. Operating behind a highly unpredictable offensive line, Wilson threw for a career-high 4,219 yards and 21 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. The ground game plummeted to 25th in the league, averaging just 99.4 yards per game, as Thomas Rawls struggled to stay healthy and Christine Michael was traded midseason. Fortunately, Doug Baldwin delivered a spectacular Pro Bowl campaign, hauling in 94 passes for 1,128 yards and seven touchdowns. Tight end Jimmy Graham also bounced back to Pro-Bowl form, contributing 923 yards and six scores to an offense that ranked 18th in points scored with 354 (22.1 ppg).
The legendary Legion of Boom remained the spine of this franchise, anchoring a defensive unit that allowed the third-fewest points in the NFL with 292 (18.3 ppg). Bobby Wagner put together a magnificent first-team All-Pro season, leading the entire league with 167 combined tackles while adding 4.5 sacks. Up front, Cliff Avril led a fierce pass rush with a career-high 11.5 sacks, while defensive end Michael Bennett provided his usual disruptive interior pressure. In the secondary, Richard Sherman grabbed four interceptions, while Kam Chancellor’s bone-jarring presence kept the defense elite. However, the unit suffered a devastating blow in Week 13 when All-Pro safety Earl Thomas went down with a season-ending broken tibia.
Seattle’s regular season was defined by hot and cold streaks, swinging from historical oddities to defensive masterpieces. The strangest moment came in Week 7 against the division rival Arizona Cardinals, ending in an exhausting, ugly 6-6 overtime tie that became the first tie in franchise history. Weeks later, the Seahawks played their best football of the year, traveling to Foxborough in Week 10 to beat the New England Patriots 31-24 in a dramatic Super Bowl XLIX rematch. Just as they seemed poised to run away with the NFC, they were thoroughly dismantled 38-10 by the Green Bay Packers in Week 14, exposing the defense’s vulnerability without Earl Thomas over the middle.
In the postseason, Seattle easily handled the Detroit Lions with a comfortable 26-6 Wild Card victory at CenturyLink Field, powered by Thomas Rawls’ franchise playoff-record 161 rushing yards. However, their journey ended the following week in a 36-20 Divisional Round defeat to the high-flying Atlanta Falcons. The legacy of the 2016 Seahawks is one of transition and survival. It highlighted the final era of defensive dominance for the core of the Legion of Boom, while officially shifting the franchise’s offensive identity entirely onto the shoulders of Russell Wilson.
