Season Review
Seattle Seahawks 2000
The 2000 Seattle Seahawks season arrived with a massive thud, completely deflating the optimism built during Mike Holmgren’s playoff-bound debut year. Lured away from Green Bay with total organizational power, Holmgren tried to patch up the roster with veterans like center Robbie Tobeck and linebacker George Koonce, alongside safety Reggie Tongue and cornerback Fred Vinson. Instead, the team crashed to a 6-10 record, finishing a disappointing fourth in the AFC West. The roster was clearly stuck between two eras, trapped by expanding depth issues and an alarming lack of execution that forced the coaching staff into an early evaluation period for the future core.
Seattle’s offense operated at a balanced but mostly inefficient clip, ranking 19th in both points scored with 320 (20.0 ppg) and total yards. The quarterback situation became a weekly headache as Jon Kitna started 12 games, throwing for 2,658 yards and 18 touchdowns, but tossing a brutal 19 interceptions while backup Brock Huard went 0-4 in his four starts. The silver lining was veteran running back Ricky Watters, who willed himself to 1,242 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while catching 63 passes for 613 yards to earn some Comeback Player of the Year votes. Rookie wideout Darrell Jackson flashed real promise with a team-high six touchdown catches, forming a solid duo with Sean Dawkins, who chipped in 731 receiving yards.
While the offense sputtered, the defense completely fell apart, plummeting to 25th in points allowed by giving up 405 points (25.3 ppg) and was dead last in the league in total yardage. Defensive anchor Cortez Kennedy wrapped up his legendary Hall of Fame career with a quiet one-sack season, leaving linebacker Anthony Simmons to carry the load with a spectacular 147 combined tackles. The secondary featured opportunistic play from Willie Williams and Jay Bellamy, who each snatched four interceptions, but the unit surrendered 2,454 rushing yards. Opposing offenses consistently bullied the defensive front, which generated just 26 sacks all year, led by Chad Brown and Lamar King with six apiece.
Key moments throughout the campaign underscored Seattle’s glaring inconsistency and penchant for late-game collapses. The season opened with an ugly 23-0 shutout loss to the Miami Dolphins, setting a grim tone, though they bounced back later with back-to-back division wins against New Orleans and San Diego. A miserable five-game losing streak through October effectively buried their playoff aspirations before a brief November resurgence against the Chargers and Jaguars offered false hope. The absolute rock bottom came in the season finale, a humiliating 42-23 blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills where the defense surrendered an inexcusable 579 total yards.
Missing the playoffs, the significance of the 2000 Seahawks rests on the transition toward their future championship core rather than their immediate success. The year marked the final chapter for Cortez Kennedy in the Pacific Northwest and the arrival of rookie running back Shaun Alexander, who scored two touchdowns in limited action. Return specialist Charlie Rogers provided a rare bright spot, after racking up 1,629 kick return yards and an 81-yard touchdown. This transitional stumble cleared the deck for Holmgren to reshape the Seahawks into the NFC powerhouse they would become a few years later.
