Season Review
Seattle Seahawks 2003
Mike Holmgren entered his fifth season in Seattle desperately needing to prove his West Coast blueprint could translate into January success. Following a mediocre four-year stretch, the 2003 Seahawks finally turned the corner by finishing 10-6 and securing second place in the NFC West. GM Bob Ferguson was busy in the offseason, adding defensive end Chike Okeafor and defensive tackle Norman Hand to bolster a leaky front seven. Seattle draft room also hit home runs, landing cornerback Marcus Trufant and safety Ken Hamlin to rejuvenate the secondary. The result was an undefeated 8-0 home record at Seahawks Stadium and the franchise first playoff berth since 1999.
Led by offensive coordinator Gil Haskell, the offense evolved into a balanced, top-tier unit, finishing seventh in the league in points scored - with 404 at 25.3 ppg - and sixth in total yards (5,627). Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck took a massive leap, starting all 16 games and throwing for 3,841 yards and 26 touchdowns to earn Pro Bowl honors. Running back Shaun Alexander provided the physical counter-punch, rushing for 1,435 yards and 14 touchdowns on 326 attempts. When Hasselbeck went to the air, wideout Darrell Jackson was his primary weapon, posting 1,137 yards and nine touchdowns on 68 receptions, while Koren Robinson contributed 896 yards to keep opposing secondaries honest.
Defensively, coordinator Ray Rhodes orchestrated a unit that finished a respectable 15th in points allowed by conceding 327 points (20.4 ppg). Free-agent acquisition Chike Okeafor paid immediate dividends, leading the pass rush with eight sacks, while veteran linebacker Chad Brown added seven sacks of his own. In the secondary, rookie safety Ken Hamlin made his presence felt with 98 combined tackles, and rookie cornerback Marcus Trufant showed veteran poise with 20 passes defended. Strong safety Reggie Tongue anchored the back end, snagging a team-high four interceptions for a defense that produced a respectable 28 turnovers.
Seattle season was defined by extreme home-and-road splits, starting with a 3-0 run that featured a dramatic 24-23 home victory over the rival St. Louis Rams in Week 3. While they dominated at home, they repeatedly faltered on the road, including a crushing 44-41 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12 and a late-season stumble against the Rams in Week 15. Facing a potential collapse, the Seahawks rallied to win their final two games, concluding with a tough 24-17 road victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 to secure their wild-card ticket.
The postseason journey ended in heart-breaking fashion during a legendary NFC Wild Card battle at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers. After Alexander scored three rushing touchdowns to force overtime, Hasselbeck won the coin toss and boldly declared, βWe want the ball, and weβre gonna score.β Instead, Packers defensive back Al Harris intercepted Hasselbeck and returned it 52 yards for a walk-off touchdown, handing Seattle a 33-27 defeat. Despite the sudden exit, the 2003 campaign laid the groundwork for Seattle future NFC supremacy, sending five players to the Pro Bowl and serving as the final ride for Hall of Fame defensive tackle John Randle.
