Season Review
Seattle Seahawks 2006
Coming off a heartbreaking Super Bowl appearance, the 2006 Seattle Seahawks entered the year with massive targets on their backs and high expectations. Head coach Mike Holmgren had to navigate a Super Bowl hangover while integrating big free-agent additions like linebacker Julian Peterson and wideout Nate Burleson. Despite a litany of crushing injuries to core stars, the Seahawks ground out a 9-7 record to secure their third consecutive NFC West division crown. It was a gritty, survivalist campaign that lacked the dominant rhythm of the previous year but proved this roster had the stomach for a fight.
The offense suffered an identity crisis as reigning MVP Shaun Alexander was limited to ten games, rushing for 896 yards and seven touchdowns behind a line trying to replace Steve Hutchinson. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck also missed four games with a knee injury, throwing for 2,442 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Backup Seneca Wallace stepped in for four starts, helping to keep the ship afloat by going 2-2. The aerial attack leaned heavily on Darrell Jackson, who hauled in 63 catches for 956 yards and 10 touchdowns. The offense finished 14th in points scored (20.9 ppg) and 19th in total yards.
Defensively, Seattle surrendered 341 points (21.3 ppg) and 5,285 yards, ranking 19th in both categories across the league. Despite the mediocre team rankings, the defensive unit boasted elite individual playmakers who constantly delivered impactful moments. Julian Peterson justified his massive contract by racking up ten sacks to earn a Pro Bowl nod alongside middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu, who anchored the unit with a team-high 123 combined tackles. Safety Ken Hamlin patrolled the secondary with three interceptions, while defensive end Darryl Tapp provided a youthful spark upfront with three sacks and nine quarterback hits of his own.
The regular season was defined by dramatic swings and late-game heroics. Kicker Josh Brown turned into a Pacific Northwest legend, nailing four game-winning field goals, including clutch kicks against St. Louis and Denver. After a blazing 3-0 start, the team hit a bumpy midseason stretch where they dropped consecutive games to Minnesota and Kansas City. A late December three-game losing streak threatened their entire season, but a crucial Week 17 victory over Tampa Bay secured the division title and home-field advantage for the opening round of the postseason.
In the Wild Card round, the Seahawks benefited from one of the most famous blunders in recent NFL history when Tony Romo botched the hold on a late field goal, sealing a 21-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The ride ended the following week in a snowy, heartbreaking 27-24 overtime loss to the top-seeded Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. While the 2006 squad failed to replicate the magic of the previous year, their ability to capture a division title amidst chaotic injuries solidified the era as the golden age of Holmgren-led football in Seattle.
